Student-Centered Learning: The Schools of the Future

Student-Centered Learning: The Schools of the Future

Syllabus and the Student

The school systems all over the world have a few standard features. The most common practice across the globe is school systems following a centralized curriculum, which is fixed for a region, a state, a country or even internationally.

All conventional forms of education have a syllabus, which is a curriculum that is adhered to by all schools, colleges, and institutes that fall under it. This syllabus includes the subjects, courses, and topics taught under that system, teaching practices, standardized tests and marking schemes, and also daily functioning schedules.

Even though schools have some breathing room about choosing what and what not to teach, in the end, they all have to follow the syllabus.

One Size Fits All

The existing system of a centralized curriculum was said to have born during the era of industrial revolution. The need of the society was an obedient workforce capable of doing repetitive tasks by using a limited set of well-honed skills. Discipline and Uniformity was also part of the aim.

Enforcing these ideas were a reason why many schools had, and still have school uniforms, rules and codes of conduct. The assembly line method of factories needed laborers who were almost robotic in their functioning.

The Changing Needs

In the 21st century, the needs of the world have changed drastically. In the era of Science and Technology, Proper Education is of utmost importance. Every field is competitive, and a student can only excel in that field where he has a natural predisposition to be successful.

In other words, a person is the best in what that person is interested in and wants to follow. Therefore, it is essential to know what the interests of a student are and support them.

Student-Centric Education: An Overview

Student Centric System of education focuses on the target of the system, the student. They are the ones who gain knowledge in a classroom, and the ones who are directly affected by any change in curriculum or teaching methods.

In such a situation, it is essential that they are considered the primary stakeholders as far as education is concerned. So, this system that makes them the pivot on which Education revolves around is a drastic improvement from the current scenario.

Classroom Education: The Teacher Oriented System

The current system of classroom education is Teacher Centric. The classroom, studying, routines and the environment, in general, is regulated by the teacher. All the students sit in quiet obedience as the class goes on.

The teacher in this scenario is in full control of the classroom, its students and activities. This control results in a well-regulated learning environment.

The Drawbacks

There are several drawbacks to this system. This is present in varying degrees in all places. They include boredom, lack of interest, unproductive work, restriction of creativity, social inhibition and so on.

Boredom stems from a student not being interested in the subject at hand. Since the teacher is in charge of the lessons, the students are compelled to study. This compulsion, coupled with lack of interest results in boredom.

Boredom paves the way for hours to be spent in meaningless silence that is as grueling as it is unproductive. The students sit still, staring at the blackboard and daydreaming, while the lessons go over their head.

A teacher-led environment may also lead to the inhibition of a student’s social and communicative skills. Since most teachers demand silence and give individual works, they miss out on the opportunity to work together and learn with peers. Due to this, they are socially awkward and lack the necessary soft skills and teamwork capabilities.

All of these depend on the teacher, and not just the students. With the right teacher, the students can flourish. However, the chances are meager.

Student-Centered Learning

Student-Centered Education is the future. The idea fits exceptionally well with the requirements of modern society. A learner-centric system can provide us with a capable workforce that we need.

The Concept

The idea is to create an educational system driven by the needs and interests of the student. Instead of the traditional curriculum where the Teacher has all the powers, this system enables the student to set the pace of their education. The teacher is merely a guide that watches over and assists the student.

The Perks

This system can replace the age-old Curriculum driven classrooms that adopt a one size fits all policy. Each student gets to follow their paths and take their own sweet time to learn things in their way. This creates an environment where all students learn the same things differently, but with the same excellent results.

This also promotes a sense of independence and cohabitation among the students. Instead of the usual learning from the teacher, they now interact with a variety of other sources including their peers, references and also their teachers.

The Future: Learner Centric Education and EdTech

EdTech is a significant factor that promotes student-centric education. With the technology to bring lessons and classes home, students have the liberty of choosing their ways to learn things at their own time. This provides the type of freedom that Student Centered education aims to provide.

Online Courses, Tests, and projects help them to learn the subjects that pique their interest, but otherwise would be inaccessible to them on an academic level. They can follow the latest updates and learn on their favorite topics, even outside an educational institution.

Learner-Centric Classrooms

The ultimate goal is the popularization of Learner Centric Classrooms to such an extent that it becomes the norm. The current state of Classrooms and Schools are Teacher-Centered. This approach can hamper the learning skills of the student.

By allowing the students to set the pace for their studies, they are at ease and can perform better. They also gain confidence and the soft skills necessary to be independent in the future.

The Verdict

To reach a target, you must aim first. In a student-centric classroom, the students are the aims. They regulate the conditions to turn it into a place where they can learn and progress. This is the alternative; the future that leads to a healthy generation.
