Iroquois Elementary, a United Way Community School, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week to celebrate the installation of a new Nonverbal Communication Sign and Buddy Swing, both designed to promote inclusivity and ensure all children could enjoy outdoor play together.
The Buddy Swing provides a safe and accessible experience for children with and without disabilities to swing side by side, fostering a sense of inclusion. Additionally, the Nonverbal Communication Sign allows students to use symbols or images to express their needs, encouraging social interaction and ensuring all students could participate in playground activities equally.
This project, funded by United Way of Erie County, was made possible thanks to the advocacy of Iroquois Elementary student Mackenzie Badowski. Last year, Mackenzie presented her vision to Community School Director Caitlin T. Kinnane and Assistant Superintendent Thad Urban, highlighting the importance of having these inclusive resources at the school. Her dedication to creating an inclusive environment led to the approval, purchase, and installation of the Buddy Swing and Nonverbal Communication Sign.
“United Way is all about breaking down barriers to make education equitable and give that experience to all students,” said Caitlin Kinnane, United Way Community School Director at Iroquois Elementary.?
We are incredibly grateful to Mackenzie for her passion and commitment to inclusivity, and to all those who contributed to making this vision a reality. Their efforts have helped make Iroquois Elementary a more welcoming place for all children.
