STUCK? WANT TO GROW FASTER? YOU HAVE OPTIONS

In one of the Facebook groups where I comment often as a group expert, I’ve seen posts like this:

“If your business isn’t growing, the only person who can help you is a top producer!”

It’s not true!

As a sales trainer, advisor success coach, and a practice development consultant with a long list of successful clients, I’ve seen many Facebook posts like this from advisors who don’t understand the resources available to them when they’re stuck.

Mentoring

Mentoring is just one of these resources. Find someone you believe is successful and get his or her help.? Sometimes, they’ll help just because you asked. Sometimes, they’ll charge you, or split fees with you, but you’ll learn their strategies and methods. Don’t be afraid to share…it’s a way to learn.

But copying what a top advisor or agent does doesn’t always work. Each year, thousands of advisors study with some of the top mentors in the field and try to copy exactly what they do—and don’t get anywhere near the same results as those mentors.

James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, explains it this way: “It’s like picking the juicy red apple off someone else’s tree and pasting it on your own, and expecting it to be the same.”

Coaching

I’ve always believed that the success of those top advisors comes from inside.? The inability to duplicate their results comes from the inside.? If my view of the world is that I can be—and deserve to be—incredibly successful, it’s likely that I will be. If my view of the world is that getting better results is a struggle, it will be.?

I have spent over 20 years studying what makes one advisor highly successful and another, in the same environment and with the same training, less so.

The outside results come from the inside perceptions. The famous motivational speaker, Zig Ziglar, called what holds us back “Stinkin’ Thinkin’”.

We all have fears, limiting beliefs, and views that don’t serve us—and even sabotage our efforts.? These influence our results more than any great strategy or methodology helps them. And we’re often blind to these internal challenges.

?Transformational coaching gets into those weeds, helping advisors get past their hidden limitations. Once those are cleared, they may or may not need a mentor, but they’ll have commitment, focus, direction, and renewed excitement for their work—and they’ll be moving forward.

A golf coach working with a pro needs to understand the game and how to show his client how his hand placement, swing, and stance are affecting his score. He doesn’t have to be a better golfer than his pro client.

Similarly, an advisor coach doesn’t have to be a better producer than his client. He needs to know how to work with his client’s ?disempowering thinking—his “inner stance”.

Training

When you first started your career, getting training in the basics of the business and the products was important.? And still is. But many advisors seek training when their problem isn’t a lack of knowledge. And they chase “shiny new objects”—jumping from one training to another in the hope they’ll find the one that’s just right for them, when their actual challenge isn’t lack of knowledge.

Consulting

In a world where how people interact, both online and offline, is constantly changing, not knowing how to market and sell your services can hold you back.? People who have learned the things you don’t have time or aptitude for can help you grow your business.

If you’ve had some success but seem to be stuck in the same place as last year and the year before, don’t assume that the only thing you can do is learn from a top advisor.? Get someone to help you with your game and you’ll see immediate improvement.
