Today I choose to believe that it is possible to prevent the worst of the climate crisis. It is not over until it is over. I choose to remind myself; however unlikely change to a fairer more Earth friendly system feels; it is important to think it is possible.
Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac write about ‘stubborn optimism’ and why it’s essential to surviving the climate crisis in their book ‘The Future We Choose.’ It is probably the most valuable contribution individuals can make to climate activism. It makes real sense that, if the outcome is unknown, an optimistic option is more motivational and practical.
Stubborn optimism is pragmatic. It increases the chances of success and makes us try more, speak more and do more. Don’t find yourself saying ‘Not in my lifetime.’ As Christiana Figueres caught herself saying to the press. I have said that too. From now on I will say that there are many challenges, but it is possible. I will say that it is a different way of thinking but we are intelligent enough. I’ll say we will need to be less selfish and that is in our nature.
We can choose to be good ancestors.

4 年Hello Shirley, I agree with you about optimism, especially if the alternative is some kind of fatalism that doesn't lead to any positive action. We can act from a positive viewpoint, knowing that we don't know what will happen, but that we can make a small difference on the positive side of the scale and that may be enough to tip the balance.
