STS Global Interoperability: Supply Group Codes Part 1
STS Association
The Standard Transfer Specification the only globally proven open standard for prepayment systems for inter-operability
The Standard Transfer Specification (STS) is the only globally accepted open standard for prepayment systems, ensuring interoperability at all levels with state-of-the-art key management services. One of the many tools used to achieve this is the implementation of Supply Group Codes (SGCs), which are essentially 6-digit numerical codes that are assigned to a specific geographical area, and then used to encode meters being deployed into that area. This plays a crucial role in managing your prepayment infrastructure and facilitates seamless transactions and interoperability across different regions and service providers. This is all securely managed through our state-of-the-art key management services operated by the Key Management Centre (KMC). This is a complex subject to fully unpack as there are many examples of how SGCs can be used, along with the best practices for each example. It is for that reason that this subject will be covered in 2 parts. In PART 1 of this article series, we begin by learning why SGCs exist and how to apply for one.
?
Why do we need SGC’s in an STS system?
Enhanced Security:
An SGC plays an important role during the encryption of an STS token, and by ensuring that meters and tokens within the same SGC are compatible, utilities can reduce the risk of transaction failures and improve the overall customer experience. In addition to this, the utility can choose which vending supplier/s they wish to use by giving them permission to vend to their SGCs. This gives the utility full control of how their prepayment vending is supplied across their entire prepayment infrastructure.
Streamlined Meter Management & Data Analytics:
Utilities can easily manage and monitor prepayment meters by grouping them under specific SGCs. This categorization simplifies administrative tasks, such as meter installations and maintenance, leading to more efficient operations, improved customer service, and faster resolution of technical queries. In addition to this, grouping meters by SGCs allows for more granular data collection and analysis, allowing utilities to gain insights into consumption patterns, identify areas with high or low usage, and make informed decisions about resource allocation and infrastructure investments.

How do you Apply for one?
This is done directly from the STS main website and requires several steps to complete the process. You are allowed to apply for as many SGCs as you require for your prepayment infrastructure, and there is no cost for these applications. Once you have your SGC (or multiple) you now have access to the state-of-the-art key management services offered by the STS Association, which is a free service to all users.

Do I need to become an STS Member to apply for one?
No, you do not need to become an STS Member to apply for an SGC. You only require STS membership if you wish to manufacture STS-compliant products or re-certify existing STS-compliant products under your company name.

In conclusion, Supply Group Codes (SGCs) are an integral part of the STS Association's framework, providing numerous benefits for managing prepayment infrastructure. By enhancing interoperability, streamlining meter management, and improving customer service, SGCs play a vital role in the efficient and secure operation of prepayment systems. For utilities, vending suppliers, prepayment equipment manufacturers, and consumers alike, understanding and leveraging the power of SGCs can lead to a more effective and satisfying prepayment experience. Stay tuned for PART 2 of this article series where we dive into the different types of SGCs, who need to apply for what, and the best practices to ensure that each user gets the best out of their STS system. STS, the only globally accepted open standard for prepayment systems, SIMPLE, TRUSTED, and SECURE.
