Struggling To Recruit? Read This.

You know about Preferred Supplier Lists (”We have a PSL!”), but did you know about MSPs who manage recruitment companies?

A (usually) generalist global agency manages all recruitment for a large company. They win the right to place all roles first, for a fee of say 12%.

When (inevitably) that generalist agency can’t find a niche candidate, they go to their PSL, and give the position to 3 or 5 specialist agencies. Usually the brief is given by the MSP (not the end-client). Then it’s a race against time to find the best candidate (available right now?).

Then the fee goes to the specialist agency.

(This is when you get contacted by multiple agencies about the same job.)

Sound like a nightmare? Oh, it is.

In 2010, I was on a briefing call with a large UK banking group for a maternity cover position where I heard *beep*, *beep*, *beep*. Almost 30 times... It was all potential agencies joining the call. Madness.

Needless to say, I moved away from that time of work pretty quickly. Most good recruiters have too.

Some smaller companies implement a similar model by directing all recruitment through their HR or Recruitment teams. This is great — for all your generalist vacancies. But how about that business-critical role in your team?

If this is how your company manages recruitment, you're struggling, and you can influence the decision — I urge you to reconsider. After your internal team tries and fails: spend some time interviewing a number of specialist suppliers.

Then work with one of them exclusively per role.

It doesn’t mean you can’t negotiate.

It doesn’t mean you won’t get any candidates.

In fact, working with one supplier who knows they are working exclusively means you’ll get a better quality of work. They wouldn’t work the role unless they can guarantee success.

If you’re still struggling — shoot me a message and I’ll try my best to help.
