Last week, something incredible happened—I was named "Larger than Life" coach of the year awarded by BizX magazine. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. But as I sat there holding the award, reflecting on my journey, I realized it wasn’t some grand, once-in-a-lifetime moment that got me here. It was something much simpler—something many of us overlook.
It was the connections I made right in my own backyard.
You see, I didn’t start out as a coach. I was a teacher—a successful one, but I wanted more. Taking the leap into coaching was terrifying, and I didn’t have a playbook to follow. What I did have was a belief in my offer (even on days when it felt wobbly), a knack for showing up, and a willingness to lean into my community.
Here are three lessons I want to share with you in the hopes that it might make a difference in your life.
Lesson 1: Local Connections Are Gold
When I first started, I thought success meant going global—building a massive online following, chasing clients from every corner of the world. And while that’s great in theory, it was the connections I made with people right here in my city that made the biggest difference.
From attending networking events to grabbing coffee with someone who’d seen my posts online, these local relationships weren’t just about business—they were about building trust and showing up as a human first. And trust me, you can’t underestimate the power of someone saying, “Hey, I know someone who could use your help!”
Lesson 2: Be of Value to Others (Without Expecting Anything in Return)
I don’t mean just handing out free advice. I mean showing up as a genuine supporter in your community. Whether it’s volunteering, sharing resources, or simply being the person who listens (really listens), these moments of generosity add up.
Funny enough, one of the connections that eventually led to this award came from a chance meeting with someone I helped years ago. At the time, I didn’t think much of it—just another day of trying to make a difference. But here we are.
Lesson 3: Believe in Your Offer (Even When No One Else Does)
I’ll admit, in the beginning, I was kind of like that squeaky wheel on a shopping cart—you know, the one that won’t stop until it’s heard. It wasn’t always easy, and sometimes I worried I was being too much. But consistency pays off.
Being visible in your local community means you have to believe in what you’re offering. People sense that confidence (or lack thereof). So even when I wasn’t sure anyone was listening, I kept showing up.
Complete transparency here.....
I used to dread networking events. In fact, my first one I sat in my car and cried because I was so terrified. Walking into a room full of strangers with sweaty palms, wondering if I’d have spinach in my teeth by the end of the night? Not my thing. But I learned something surprising: when I let my guard down and just showed up as myself, I connected with people who actually got me.
And those people are the ones who’ve cheered me on, referred clients, and even nominated me for this award.
What Does This Mean for You?
If you’re a coach or consultant trying to grow, don’t overlook the power of your local network. Start with these three steps:
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for the people right here in my community who’ve played a part in my journey. They remind me that success doesn’t always come from far away—it’s often right in front of us, waiting for us to reach out.
So, to all the dreamers out there: show up, be yourself, and don’t forget to check your teeth before networking. ??
Happy Thanksgiving, Tina
