Struggling With Cold-Emails? All You Need is This One Cold-Emailing Template

What a beautiful month!!!

  • At CJ Digitals, we onboarded two new clients. Excited to begin this journey.
  • Onboarded two new interns. Excited to train them from December 1.
  • Got 4-5 coffee orders from my LinkedIn connections -- Yayy!!
  • Two of my participants got international clients
  • One participant in the final negotiation with the international client ($50 for a 1000-word article)
  • Two participants managed to get full-time jobs
  • One participant landed a domestic client who is paying him in advance. How freaking awesome it is!!
  • At "Viraj Bolta Hai," I finally started taking sessions for detailed digital marketing!

Coming to the topic of this newsletter!

Daily, I talk with around 15-20 freelance writers who share their ordeal with me about not getting high-ticket clients. And the one thing that I wish to tell them and everyone -- stop calling your clients, high-ticket clients. Just like you, your clients are humans. And if you treat them only as someone who pays your bills, you will be the recipient of the bad news pretty soon!

A bit of advice from a fellow writer - when you get a client, try to solve their problems in the best way possible. If you help them, trust me, they will help you as well. It is as simple as that!!

Now, to those fellow writers who are still chasing dreams but wondering how to pitch, talk, and present their work to new prospective clients, I have seen that writing emails is the best way ahead.

Remember this that just because you are a writer, it does not mean that your cold email message should read like this:

Hello sir/madam,

I am a freelance writer with 5+ years of experience. I am your SEO guy who writes magically. I have created 1000+ pages of multiple domains, like lifestyle, health, mental health, sports, etc.

I want to work with you in your company as a freelancer. I am attaching my work links with you. Please do consider my profile.

Thanking You

Believe me, when I say this, my People's Person at CJ Digitals and Satvic Foods receives around 5-7 such emails every day. And when I saw their work and LinkedIn profile, I realized they are legit writers with solid experience, but I wondered why they failed to impress me in the cold email.

Here are a couple of tips for those writers who are trying cold pitches but are just refreshing their Gmail, hoping something comes up -- and just like my coffee, nothing is coming up, na? That's the hint!!

  • Work on Subject:?In cold emailing, the subject is most important. This is where half the battle is fought, and you will only win it if you work hard on it. Suppose you are sending article ideas to a prospective client for the first time. In that case, you might be tempted to write a comprehensive subject line, like: "Freelance Writer With 5+ SEO Experience" Bhai, ye subject line ne tabse chalna band kardiya jab se papa ne Hero Honda Splendor sell kiya thi! [What an amazing bike it was!!!] Stick to writing something concise in the subject line that lets your client knows that you are here to solve the problem. How about a subject line like this: " {Name}, Article Ideas for Your {Brand Name}."
  • The Body Work:?Oh, I miss my car! Anyone who owns a car knows how important bodywork really is! Jokes aside, ensure the body of the email is dedicated to your past work and your current problem-solving abilities while elaborating more on your subject line and explaining why you and only you are the best individuals for the current vacancy.

Some other important factors to consider while you write a cold email are:

  • Make sure it is short, elegant, and simple, and it should be written like a human for a human!
  • Try to add social proof in your email, as it adds credibility. "I have 100K + views on LinkedIn" might work, but "I helped my client gain 10K+ impressions on every post" would surely work! The important thing here is that you must talk about yourself and your skills while discussing the brands you have worked with. Subtle!
  • Your intentions should be clear in the first 100 words itself. Don't just explain why you're reaching out today — explain why you're reaching out to?them today!

As a freelancer, you should realize that your client is always getting emails from writers! Some are more talented, and others have a better portfolio! In your cold email content, you should convince them why/how you are better -- that's it! That's the game!

If you have tried all and are still facing issues, check out this cold-email template. Please do let me know if it worked for you:

Hello [Name with the right salutation],

I have been a fan of what [Company Name] has been doing over the past couple of years. As a professional writer, who previously worked with [brand names], I found your company's vision exciting and the need of the hour.

I am reaching out today because I am currently working on a list of founders and entrepreneurs who have made a significant change in 202X. I would really like to understand your challenges, efforts, and ways that you followed while bringing your vision to reality.

If you have half an hour of your time this week, I will schedule a call with you where we will discuss [brand name]. I will take our conversation and publish it on my website, where you will find 100+ blogs and articles on [client's domain].

I hope you have had a great week so far, [Name].

Regards

In this template, you will see that we have not pitched about work. Rather we talked about a short interview. This would help easily break the ice as you are giving the brand and the brand owner a free interview that would be published. If you have technical experience, you can also mention how in your interview, you will also provide them with a dofollow link, helping with their website's ranking.

  • The goal is not to directly pitch them anything.
  • The goal here is to understand if they require your services or not!
  • The goal here is to make them believe during your first call what kind of work you have been doing so far!
  • The goal here is to sell your portfolio to them without selling your portfolio.
  • The goal here is to not add any promotional links or services or even if they are looking for someone. You need to be patient at this stage!

If you are patient enough, things will turn out in your favor. And even if it does not, you will get a handy experience in discovery calls. That being said, if you are still struggling with clients, writing, and international acquisitions, ping me, and we will sort this out!

Oh, my! 1100-words already. I should go now!

Going!

Still waiting on my coffee!!

A lot of people say that you should not give any URL or attachments in your cold email. How do you look at it, Viraj?
