Struggling with a Career Decision? Here’s my fool proof 3-Step Process for making all decisions

5 years ago I was faced with a big career decision. 

I had the opportunity to start a business in Australia - a country I had never lived in. It felt like an amazing opportunity. But the weight of the decision was huge.

• I would have to put my own money in to start the business
• I would have to leave the UK and move to a country I didn’t know
• It was a start-up with no guarantees 

When I discussed it with my mentor, he told me to consider 3 things:

1. Who am I going to meet?

2. What am I going to learn?

3. And where it is going to take me?

He said if the answer to at least 2/3 of these questions was positive, then there was no way I could ever lose with this decision.

Because even if the business failed, I will have:

1. Met people who could positively impact my career in the future

2. Learnt something valuable that I can use moving forward

3. Laid the foundation and learning for a future opportunity

He was right. Even if the business failed - if at least 2/3 of those answers were positive - it would not have been a failure.

Guess what?

The business did fail.

Less than 12 months in, the business had to be shut down.

But when that moment came, I wasn’t upset.

I had met some amazing people (Network built!)

I had learnt how to set up a business in another country (WOW!)

And I had laid the foundation for my next business.

If you are struggling with big career decisions, just ask yourself those 3 questions.  Before you consider anything else, consider those 3 things.

And if 2/3 are positive, take the leap.
