Struggles with Purpose & Legacy?

I have struggled with purpose and legacy throughout my life. I'm not religious, which I know, for many people, can provide a greater sense of purpose; I am not 'famous' through the arts; music, sports, TV or film, which often provides a creative legacy, far beyond a lifetime. I'm also acutely aware that for some people, this is not a question they have the time, job, food or economic certainty to ask... it's a question, I am lucky to be able to consider.

Purpose and legacy are however important to me, they drive me more than money, more than my own personal success and it's one of the reasons I always wanted to be the founder of a business, to create something bigger than just me.

Finding purpose and creating a legacy are two deeply personal and individual pursuits, but here are some things you could try if you are looking to understand yours:

  1. Reflect on your values: To find your purpose and create a legacy, it's important to start by understanding your core values. What do you stand for? What do you care about? What do you want to be remembered for? Take some time to reflect on these questions and write down your answers.
  2. Identify your strengths and passions: Think about the things you're good at and the things you enjoy doing. These can be clues to your purpose and legacy. If you can combine your strengths and passions with your values, you may be on your way to finding a meaningful path forward.
  3. Set goals: Once you have an idea of what you want to achieve, set some specific, measurable goals to help you get there. Make sure your goals are aligned with your values, strengths, and passions.
  4. Take action: Goals are meaningless without action. Start taking steps towards your goals, no matter how small. Each step you take will bring you closer to your purpose and legacy.
  5. Seek support: Don't be afraid to seek support from others, whether it's a mentor, a coach, or a supportive friend or family member. Building a legacy and finding your purpose can be challenging, and having someone to support and guide you can make a big difference.

Understanding that your values, purpose and legacy will evolve is really important. Keep checking in, keep evolving and keep growing. The values, purpose and legacy I wish to create today are very different to the ones I would have visualised in my 20s and early 30s.

Remember, finding purpose and creating a legacy is a lifelong journey, and it may take time to get there. Be patient, stay committed to your goals, and be open to new opportunities and experiences that can help you along the way.

Reflect on your values ??- simple yet powerful. And all the other steps too. I had the opportunity to be on a Total Leadership course with Stew Friedman while at PepsiCo where developing a vision for the future and checking in often helps to ground me.

Excellent work Rory! Links very closely to the work I am involved in with Floyd Woodrow through his fantastic Compass For Life programme. Looks like we have another budding Navigator Floyd?!
