In recent times, Pakistan has witnessed a complex and tumultuous relationship with the concept of democracy, raising concerns about the erosion of democratic values and principles. The arrest of Mian Azhar, an 82-year-old independent candidate supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has once again ignited debates about the state of democracy in the country. This incident reflects the broader challenges facing the democratic process in Pakistan, where the definition of democracy seems to be evolving, prompting accusations of a move towards a more authoritarian regime.
The Arrest of Mian Azhar:
Hammad Azhar, a prominent leader of the PTI and former federal minister, took to social media to express his dismay over the arrest of his father, Mian Azhar, by the Punjab police. The arrest occurred ahead of an election rally in Lahore, where Mian Azhar, a candidate for the February 8 elections from the NA-129 constituency, aimed to exercise his democratic and constitutional right to lead a rally.
Hammad Azhar painted a grim picture of the state of affairs in Pakistan, alleging that the country had transformed into a "total fascist state" with a disregard for human rights and the rule of law. He pointed fingers at Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, accusing them of wielding undue influence and damaging the country.
PTI's Reaction and Countrywide Power Show:
The PTI, in response to the arrest, condemned the actions of the authorities, labeling them as "highly condemnable." The party claimed that its candidates were facing obstacles in conducting peaceful election rallies, contrasting the treatment with that of other political parties like PML-N and PPP, which were allegedly free to organize events.
In a show of strength and defiance, PTI's founding chairman, Imran Khan, called for a countrywide power show, urging all ticket holders and party workers to take to the streets. Imran Khan's directive emphasized the importance of asserting the party's presence and warned that failure to hold rallies might result in the cancellation of tickets.
The Aftermath of Imran Khan's Arrest:
The recent events echo the turbulence that unfolded on May 9, 2023, when Imran Khan was arrested from the Islamabad High Court. PTI supporters across the country protested, with some demonstrations escalating into riots that saw mobs targeting military installations. This incident marked a turning point in the public's perception of democracy, and its aftermath continues to influence the political landscape.
Challenges to Democracy in Pakistan:
The incident surrounding Mian Azhar's arrest highlights the challenges faced by democracy in Pakistan. Accusations of selective treatment, restrictions on political activities, and the alleged influence of a ruling elite have fueled discontent among the public. The evolving meaning of democracy in the Pakistani context is a cause for concern, as citizens grapple with the idea that their democratic rights are being curtailed rather than upheld.
Conclusion:
The arrest of Mian Azhar and the subsequent political developments underscore the delicate state of democracy in Pakistan. The allegations of a move towards authoritarianism, coupled with the calls for a countrywide power show, reveal the deep-seated concerns about the erosion of democratic values. As Pakistan navigates these challenging times, a transparent and inclusive democratic process remains crucial for fostering stability, ensuring the protection of human rights, and upholding the rule of law. The trajectory of democracy in Pakistan will continue to shape the nation's political landscape and influence its standing on the global stage.

1 年Why it was ok when PMLN leaders were being arrested and jailed during 2017-22 but now democracy is threatened if PTI leaders are being arrested now? All these politicians whether PMLN, PPP or PTI/MQM etc have been involved in white collar crimes and unethical activities from top to bottom. Why media never wants to talk honestly about these issues? There has been massive corruption done by Sharif family since 1985, by Benazir Bhutto & Zardari since 1988 and by Imran Khan during 2018-22. MQM was more of a crime mafia then a political party. Why journalists never write about that? Why don’t the deals with establishment by Nawaz Sharif in 1980s, 90s talked about? Why Zardari/BB deal of 1993 and 2007 never talked about? Why journalists want to hide that establishment made a one man party since 1996 into a national level party by 2017/18? Why the media ???? is so ???? and always doing convenient morality and expediency?
