Strategic Thinking & Optimism are my Superpowers
Nikki Ewing, fashion designer and CEO of Dark Knits Boutique, spent the last year in a labour of love, one that would complement her love for her fiancé, Shane. This, however, was a labour of love in hand-crafting her one-of-a-kind silk jersey wedding gown.
Building a reputation for designing pieces that make a perfect fit and complement all body types isn’t the only reason Nikki decided to wear her own design for her trip down the aisle. Rather, it was the intricacy of the exquisite design, and a combination of the print and accoutrements needed that challenged Nikki to showcase her specialist embroidery and corsetry techniques.
Dark Knits Boutique was established in 2006. They have ample experience making anything you are looking for, from bespoke clothing and corsetry to theatrical and film quality costumery and coordinating props to unique and one-of-a-kind handmade wedding gowns and complementary pieces.
Nikki’s wedding gown, and the lilac silk jersey fabric, was chosen not only for elegance, style and functionality, but for the colour. Nikki wanted a specific purple-grey colour. (The bridesmaids dresses, which were also designed and hand-crafted by Nikki, were a deeper combination of the purple-grey colour palette.)
Nikki’s gown was around 12 yards of fabric. The lace is embroidered, beaded, gem-stoned and 3D appliqued. The beads are iridescent glass. The gemstones in the centre of the 3D applique flowers are Swarovski crystals. There are hundreds of thousands of each on the gown. The lace took upwards of a year to make. The dress itself took about a month of working full time on it. The gown is two separable pieces; the corset bodice and the mermaid bottom. Nikki designed it this way as she envisioned getting more wear out of it, accordingly. This gorgeous gown would retail for $18,500 - $23,500.
“I chose this structured, while romantic and ethereal design because it made me feel strong, romantic, innocent and modern, and because it was unusual and one-of-a-kind, just like me.” Nikki said of her custom designed wedding gown.
Nikki’s bespoke clothing and corsetry, as well as her costumery and coordinating props adorns the runways of numerous fashion and Cosplay events. Clients note her pieces aren’t conventional which is exactly what makes them perfectly unique for any occasion.
You can contact Dark Knits Boutique for an entire head-to-toe outfit or just that one nagging piece you can’t complete on your own. Quotes vary in price to encompass the wide array of materials required, specialized machinery, time involved, and detailing required.
