The Structure of the Department of Defense
How does the Department of Defense operate??
There is a common misconception that the Department of Defense is made up entirely of military personnel. But actually, there are a significant number of civilians who play a key role in the policy, development, and administration. Our co founder, Dr. Goodwin is a retired Army Colonel and has years of experience in the DoD.?
The Secretary of Defense is appointed by the President as head of the DoD and 2nd in command of the military. If you work within the Department of Defense, you will hear about Title 10 often. This is the statute that outlines the role of our armed forces in the United States. It provides the basis for everything from the roles to the missions and organizations for each of the services within the DoD.
Here is a broad overview of how the DoD is organized:
At the top of the DoD is the Secretary of Defense, every aspect of the DoD reports to the SecDef. The Inspector General reports directly to the SecDef. Then there are five important parts underneath to familiarize yourself with: The Office of the Secretary of Defense, The Department of the Navy, The Department of the Army, the Department of the Air Force, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Within these five are various agencies, departments, and leaders that make up the entirety of the DoD.
This is just a small percentage of the people and systems in the Department of Defense. Dr. Goodwin goes into detail about all of them and uses a chart to show you visually.?
Through our Government 101 course, we give you access to this entire DoD organizational chart that outlines details into how it functions, people in charge, and how it is organized. Sign up now for your free trial. www.uofconsulting.com
