A Strong Team Foundation

James Brown, sportscaster, credits his experience as captain of his basketball team at Harvard University with developing team skills that have equipped him to lead effectively in his career. Whenever he is building a new team, or adding members to his team, he focuses on three keys for a successful team foundation.

  1. Set the right priorities. Have a vision of what you want and what you want your team to achieve. Determine what is important to the success of the vision and make sure all members of your team are on the same page.
  2. Establish the right culture.

a. Develop effective communication skills.

b. Dress with good attire.

c. Prioritize promptness. Be ahead of time.

d. Have a thirst and a hunger for knowledge.

e. Refine interpersonal skills.

f. Plan for dealing with diversity.

3. Create the right perspective. If you have the right attitude, you will win. Hold those around you in high esteem.

Brown believes in living intentionally and encourages others to do the same. He selects team members who have priorities, culture, and perspective that align with the rest of the team, building the foundation for a cohesive, results-oriented team.
