The Strong Energy Dog.

The Strong Energy Dog.

Conducted an IBAC (Initial Behavioral Assessment and Consultation) with these lovely folks and their two little monkeys. One, a (mentally) strong energy dog, and the other- a (mentally) softer energy dog (...and the bullied).

Stronger energy dogs can be frustrating to deal with for those who don't understand them. They're typically quite assertive, determined, have lower levels of tolerance, are stronger in will, stubborn, intense, and quite head strong. Matched with a softer energy human, and in a home where there's little to no order, rules, structure, boundaries, *leadership*, or provided outlets to direct their intensity, focus, or discharge physical energy--- it's like building a ticking time bomb. These dogs need more than the softer energy, passive, marshmallow types of dogs, and will likely "take over" and start calling the shots if their human is not. This can be quite stressful for the people they live with.... and potentially risky for the general public they share space with.?

Living with stronger energy dogs that go unchecked can often translate into families never having visitors or guests over (in fear of "what might happen), the dog living in a much smaller world (only seeing the four walls of the home... maybe the backyard), a more isolated / separated life (which only builds frustration and intensity in the dog, exasperating any given behaviors), little to no walks, little to no exposure, more (improper) use of the crate and extended crate times..... and more.?

What typically goes unchecked, will always continue (even intensify). Some of the practices and behaviors in play include...

- aggression,?

- hypervigilance,?

- mouthing and nipping,?

- urinating in the house,

- jumping on people,?

- placing demands,?

- stealing food and trash,?

- guarding,

- threatening and blowing up at other dogs,

- threatening and objecting to visitors and guests,?

- excessive attention seeking,?

- bullying,?

- pulling on the leash,?

- separation anxiety,?

- jumping on the furniture (...as well as the table),

- general anxiety, and

- nervousness.

This family is relatively "seasoned" when it comes to dogs, but - as they all do - different dogs will always come into our lives with different lessons to impart. ?They will always challenge us in new and different ways, and ways that benefit us. Always.?

Relationships of all kinds are so very educational. Reflecting, highlighting, punctuating.... and the relationship we have with our dogs is no different.

I applaud this family for stepping up to understand their dogs better, and make some necessary changes. <3
