Stripping

It’s not always easy explaining the print & packaging finishing world to friends and family who ask what I do.
Imagine trying to explain the job if one were to work in the stripping department at a finishing company. Yet that is the conversation I stumbled upon with a Platinum Converting employee, and it made for a good smile on a Thursday morning.
The pricing is excellent.
Who doesn’t love to hear - ?you’re pricing is excellent. It’s been happening lately so thought I’d read the tea leaves and share for those looking to improve costs and efficiencies.
Why is the pricing excellent?
It’s how we’re stripping and it’s called blanking.
When we blank, we reduce man hours, which helps reduce the cost.
If you do this, you might want to consider blanking:
-????????? Larger quantities, above 50,000
-????????? Cover weight, 6 pt and above for paper thickness
?
-????????? Specialty Direct Mailers
-????????? PMC cards or CR 80 cards
-????????? Sleeves
-????????? Brochures
-????????? Custom Folders
- Cover weight envelopes
-????????? Auto Bottom Boxes
-????????? Folding cartons
-????????? Pizza boxes
-????????? Rigid boxes
?What the blank is blanking?
Let's start with an example. For larger quantities, printers can print so many up on a sheet.

As an example, on a 28 x 40, maybe there are 6 up on a sheet.
Once it is printed, it needs to be die-cut to the flat size and the waste needs to be stripped away. Hence the term stripping. With blanking, we can run the 28 x 40 sheet through our Bobst blanker and it strips away the waste automatically (see blue, below) so that we can bring the product over to our folding & gluing station to fold and glue without needing to strip.
For lower quantities, manual stripping is a good option and our stripping department is one of the busiest departments.
It’s when we get in to larger quantities, that blanking can help decrease costs and manual labor.
How are you stripping now for your large quantity projects?
Do you have existing or new projects you’d like to evaluate?
Thank you for reading, it's been a privledge to put this together. A special shout-out to our Operations and Stripping department for help with the videos and our CAD department for artwork.
