Stripe Tax in 2024: Scaling Success with Continued Global Expansion and Flexibility
As 2024 comes to an end, it's a great time to look back at the significant progress we've made in supporting businesses within the Internet economy. This year, we've continued helping these businesses streamline their core operations by automating complex tax compliance processes. I’d like to highlight some key features we introduced in Stripe Tax, specifically designed to empower players in the e-commerce and digital economy sectors.
Global Expansion: Tax Support Across 39 new Countries
One of our proudest accomplishments in 2024 was expanding Stripe Tax support to 91 countries. Listening closely to our high-growth users eager to take their SaaS solutions global, we rolled out tax calculation capabilities in 39 new markets. This growth significantly strengthened our presence in APAC, LATAM, and Africa, including countries like Morocco, and Peru, which introduced tax collection obligations for foreign sellers in 2024. This expansion enables businesses to scale more efficiently, exploring new opportunities without facing tax-related barriers.
Tailored Solutions for Unique Products
For businesses offering unique, out-of-the-box products in regions with complex taxability rules like the US, a tailored approach is essential. Recognizing this need, we introduced the capability to customize tax rates within Stripe Tax. This feature allows businesses to ensure that their tax calculations align perfectly with the expertise of their internal tax teams or advisors, providing peace of mind in a complex landscape. It is particularly beneficial for content creators and SaaS providers, as it allows them to offer innovative products while remaining fully compliant with tax regulations.

Delivery Done Right: Tackling Complex State Fees
E-commerce sellers are facing a new wave of taxes, with retail delivery fees spreading rapidly across the US. As e-commerce grows, putting pressure on infrastructure and reducing fuel tax revenues, states like Minnesota have followed Colorado's example in introducing these fees. Other states, such as New York and Washington, are also considering adoption. While the fees per order are minor, the complexity of handling state-specific tax calculations is significant. To address this, we've integrated retail delivery fee support into Stripe Tax, easing the administrative burden and allowing sellers to concentrate on growth instead of compliance hurdles.
Navigating US Tax Registration with Confidence
Embarking on the path to tax compliance begins with tax registration. Recognizing its importance, Stripe has introduced a tax registration service. This service efficiently handles registrations across US states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, directly interfacing with local tax authorities on behalf of remote sellers in the US. Once Stripe finalizes the registration process, your Stripe Dashboard is automatically updated with the pertinent tax details, enabling you to begin calculating taxes seamlessly and without any further action on your part.
Global Filing Made Simple: Unlocking Compliance through Partnerships
As part of our mission to simplify global tax compliance, Stripe Tax has introduced an innovative Liability API aimed at facilitating seamless integration for our partners. This advancement broadens the range of filing solutions available to our Stripe Tax users. By collaborating with partners such as Taxually , who have embraced our API, businesses can access a comprehensive global filing solution. This partnership-driven approach equips businesses with the essential tools to effortlessly and confidently navigate international tax obligations.
