Stretching your stretch goals
It’s amazing how far we can reach when we really want something—or when the pressure is on! I recently re-watched the movie, U-571, a thriller set during WWII. Matthew McConaughey stars as Lt. Tyler, a naval officer who is not prepared to sacrifice the lives of some men to save others. He has to stretch well beyond his comfort zone when circumstances put him in command. Near the end, when one of his men can’t reach far enough to grab a critical piece of equipment that is vital to saving the submarine, Lt. Tyler orders him to go back and complete the mission. He must stretch farther than he imagines possible.
In more peaceful times, our assignments may not be so extreme as in this situation, but before launching stretch goals in sales, or in any endeavor, it’s wise to set these as high as possible while still bringing about a positive result. When goals are drastically outrageous, everyone loses. Make them meaningful, achievable and challenging… but doable.
Stretching can inspire new levels of commitment and determination when attempting to achieve the best. Sometimes there will be sacrifices if stretching means making budgets last longer or requiring more production out of fewer people. Knowing when and what to stretch for takes effort and insight. Motivating everyone—not necessarily ordering them—to step up their games is not a simple task. Some personalities will readily agree, some only partially and others won’t buy in at all.
