At a Stretch: Why Saying ‘Yes’ to Everything is a One-Way Ticket to Burnout
Hello, business owners...
You know how it goes. A client asks for just a little extra. A friend needs a favour. A new opportunity pops up, and you think, I can squeeze that in. Before you know it, you’re running on caffeine, neglecting your health, and your family is giving you that look—the one that says, Are you seriously checking emails at the dinner table again?
The ‘Yes’ Trap
Small business owners—especially in the early days—tend to operate on a default setting of yes. Yes to extra work. Yes to impossible deadlines. Yes to late nights and early mornings. Yes, even when you know you’re already stretched too far. Because saying no feels like turning down opportunity, right?
Except… it’s not.
Every ‘yes’ to something that drains you is a ‘no’ to something that fuels you—whether that’s your health, your family, or the strategic work that actually grows your business.
Burnout is Bad for Business
Overcommitting isn’t just exhausting—it’s bad for business. When you’re stretched too thin:
Your work suffers. Creativity and quality drop when you’re running on fumes.
Your health takes a hit. Constant stress doesn’t just mess with your sleep; it can lead to serious long-term problems.
Your relationships pay the price. Being present with family and friends is just as important as showing up for work.

So why do we keep doing it? Simple: because we think we have to.
A Better Way (Literally)
That’s where A Better Way Of Life comes in. It’s a community of people who get it—business owners, creatives, and entrepreneurs who have learned (sometimes the hard way) that doing everything alone is a fast track to burnout.
The secret? Collaboration and boundaries.
Collaboration: You don’t have to do it all yourself. Learning to partner, delegate, and lean on others can take so much weight off your shoulders. (And, fun fact: people actually want to help!)
Boundaries: Saying no to the wrong things means saying yes to the right ones. Setting clear limits on your time, energy, and availability isn’t selfish—it’s survival.
The Power of Community
One of the best things about being around others who’ve been there is realising you’re not alone. If you’re drowning in work and feeling like you’re the only one struggling, trust me—you’re not. Surrounding yourself with people who understand, who remind you it’s okay to slow down, and who help you figure out a better way (see what I did there?) is invaluable.
So, if you’ve been stuck in the ‘yes’ trap, consider this your friendly nudge to step back, re-evaluate, and start making choices that serve you—not just your inbox.
Let’s talk: Have you ever stretched yourself too thin? What did you do to fix it? Drop a comment—I’d love to hear how you’re navigating this balancing act!
