Stress In the Workplace

Nearly 3 in 4 Americans felt that 2020 was the most stressful year of their lives, and 57% admitted to being more stressed than they’ve ever been.[1]?As a leader, managing and reducing stress in the workplace is one way to improve the lives and productivity of those you work with. There are the practical ways like increasing breaks and times of rest, celebrating wins and the accomplishments of individuals, and taking an interest in the personal development of others.
Reducing stress is also a spiritual exercise. Matthew 6:34 says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” This is a great reminder to not overburden yourself or others with multiple issues and challenges, stacked on top of one another. You eat an elephant one bite at a time—focus on today and what can be accomplished now.?
Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Are you praying regularly about your workplace? Are you praying for those you lead—for their personal and spiritual wellbeing? What about praying to God about the very stresses and trials that are making you and others anxious? You don’t have to turn the office into a prayer meeting to do this—your personal time with God in prayer can do wonders to relieve your own stress and the stress of others.
God does not want you to be stressed. Psalm 94:19 reminds us, “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.” God encourages us to focus on Him in times of stress, so that He can bring rest, comfort and peace to our souls, our lives, and our work.
