"When it all falls....when it all falls down...I'll be your fire when the lights go out. When there's no one, no one else around...we'll be two souls in a ghost town". This is one of my favorite songs of Madonna.
Stress can cause paralysis and can create an internal emptiness and darkness...very similar to a "ghost town"filled with insecurities and fears. It can come from everywhere-everyday work situations, family issues, unpredictable events, etc. Different people react differently to stress. We can choose healthy or unhealthy ways to cope with the weight and negativity of stress. We can also use stress as a motivator for overcoming situations we no more like to find ourselves in. One thing is for sure-stress is an inevitable part of our lives.
Are there strategies we can learn in order to protect our emotional state?
I have identified the following 4 ways of dealing with stress:
1. Workload management strategies: for preventing stress by organizing your schedule more effectively.
2. Defense building: for reducing stress by eliminating stressful situations.
3. Thinking-based techniques: for dealing with stress by thinking about things differently.
4. Relaxation exercises: for coping with stress in situations that are out of your control.
So, when the lights go out...through intentionally using the right mental tools, we can light our own fire and stand above the circumstances.
