Stress Less & Negotiate Better Using Text & Online Communication

This week’s featured episode, Text Message Negotiation Mastery with Veronica Cravener, Esq., is perfect for those looking to learn how to negotiate more effectively via email and text messages!?

I can’t think of a more relevant topic for today’s world.

Veronica Cravener is an attorney and mediator who specializes in online dispute resolution. After taking some quick data, she began to notice how higher settlement rates were for her online meditations as compared to those that took place in person.?

These findings made her curious, so in addition to her mediation work, she has recently begun exploring the reasons why an online format may be a better option for our most difficult negotiations.?

One theory is that the nature of text or online communication actually protects us against those rising tensions that lead to anger and/or the fight or flight response. Not only are we no longer bound by the limitations of physical space (sitting in a small room for hours), we are also given more time to reflect on what has been presented and respond appropriately.?

Essentially -? emotional tension remains low and intentional (and productive) communication increases.?

While settlement rates may be higher, Veronica reminded listeners that the mediation process itself will be longer.?

In fact, moving at a slower pace is one of Veronica’s three key tools for negotiating over text messages and online communication.?

Starting with pace, she recommends slowing things down by only asking one question at a time and sticking to one topic at a time. The process may be a bit slower, but because participants are experiencing less stress, they are not only more likely to remain engaged, but more likely to develop more creative solutions that work for all parties.?

Pace flows seamlessly into Veronica’s second tool for online negotiations.

Check out the episode to learn what that tool is and more!?
