When you ask people how they’re doing, do you ever hear, I’m stressed out.
I hear it. And I used to ask, what are you stressed out about?
But I’ve realized it was too late for me to ask that question.
Whatever they’re stressed out about really didn’t matter anymore.
Sure they could, and should, work on whatever it is they’re stressed about and try to feel better.
But the real problem is that they didn’t prepare themself for battle, so the stress took over.
James Stockdale, who was a prisoner of war in Viet Nam for almost eight years said:?“Our bottom line was this: The challenge of education is not to prepare people for success but to prepare them for failure.
I think part of what he’s saying is to make yourself tough NOW so when those stressful situations do strike, we’re prepared, mentally and physically, to deal with them and move forward.
How about you? Are you preparing yourself? You have to be bigger and tougher than the stressor. If your stress level is 7, then you need to be an 8.
Here’s 7 things you can do to toughen up and be ready to take on whatever’s coming at you.
Positive self-talk. It can rewire your brain.
Surround yourself with positive people. Whiners and complainers drain your energy.
Make sure you are in the best physical shape you can be in. Good health has a positive impact on your brain and self-confidence.
Try meditation or prayer. Even 12 minutes a day works.
Practice random acts of kindness. It’s empowering when you’re sincerely kind to someone.
Keep a Success Journal. Write in it and review it often.
Get six to eight hours of restful sleep a night. You need to be alert to succeed.
I could keep going but I think you get the idea.
Stressful situations are going to come at you. It’s a fact of life.
There are plenty of these.
Once again, the KEY is to prepare yourself ahead of time like an athlete does before the big contest.
So, here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it: I’ve listed just a few ways to build your toughness and resiliency. Try a few of them or create your own.
As they say in sports, the best defense is an aggressive offense. Go on offense this week and beat back those pesky stressors.
If you think this would be helpful to anyone else who needs to be tougher in the face of stressful situations, do them a favor, and please share this post. Remember, one hand washes the other and together they get clean. Thank you for watching. Don’t stress out and just have a really rewarding week. And I’ll see you next time.

1 年Good post. My negative self-talk kicked in at the thought of 12 mins of meditation a day. Then I remembered I could make a goal of 3 minutes and add incrementally, similar to what I’m doing with pushups, walking, and swapping an electronic device for a real book.
