According to the American Institute of Stress, in 2022:

  • Fifty-five percent of Americans reported stress during the day. This was 20% higher than the global average.?
  • Ninety-four percent of workers reported feeling stressed at work regularly.?
  • Seventy-six percent of U.S. workers stated that workplace stress negatively impacted their personal relationships.

Understanding Chronic Stress

Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure endured for a prolonged period over which an individual perceives they have little or no control. It contrasts with acute stress, which is often short-term and stems from immediate threats or pressures.

Some of us can go for prolonged periods of time – even years - with the appearance of functioning well under the pressure of constant stress. But make no mistake: there are pitfalls to a life of chronic, improperly managed stress. It can lead to significant health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. It adversely affects your immune system. In the workplace, it can lead to reduced productivity, absenteeism, and higher turnover rates. In personal life, it can strain relationships and impede personal growth.

Is it time for a stress detox plan yet?

A stress detox plan helps in actively managing stress levels, improving overall health, and enhancing quality of life. Without effective stress management, the continuous wear and tear on the body can lead to long-term health issues and affect emotional and mental well-being.


The Stress Detox Plan

Here are five things you can start doing to detox from stress:

  • Let’s get spiritual! Whether you pray, meditate, or simply do mindful activities, taking time to connect with your inner essence helps to center your mind, ground yourself, gain clarity, and give yourself grace when necessary. These practices help center the mind, reduce rumination, and bring about a sense of calm and clarity, making them effective tools in stress management.
  • Walk this way! Or any other type of movement you can think of. Regular exercise helps to elevate your mood during the day and sleep better at night.?
  • So nutritious. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can boost your energy and mood.?
  • Rock-a-bye, Baby. Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more. Setting a consistent sleep schedule and creating a restful environment are critical for quality sleep.
  • Stop media brain drain. This is temporary, but the benefits are awesome! Instead of filling your brain with the latest crimewave information or social media challenge, take a media break. Watch your mood lift and your outlook change. And you’ll be more productive too.

We often normalize – and even glorify - stress so much in society that we tell ourselves it is ok. And that is only if we acknowledge it at all. See my newsletter about decentering stress.

With that understanding, the time to develop and implement a stress detox plan is not when you are at your wit’s end and nearing your breaking point. The time is right now. Develop it, practice it, and use it regularly. Why? Because when you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.
