Understanding Stress and Anxiety in Adolescents

Stress is the body’s reaction, which is triggered by any event to disturb our normal state of well- eing. Following events can generally initiate or aggravate stress, such as frustration, conflicts , and over burden.

A certain level of stress can motivate adolescents to perform better; chronic or excessive stress can have detrimental effects on their mental and physical health.

Anxiety is a more persistent feeling of worry or fear, often without a clear cause. It can interfere with daily activities and may indicate an anxiety disorder if severe.

The prevalence of stress and anxiety among adolescents in India –

A study has been published in the journal Journal of Mental Health and Human Behaviour?26(2):p 153-160, Jul–Dec 2021?to investigate the prevalence of stress, anxiety, and depression among Indian youth during the COVID-19 lockdown. A total of 1641 Indian youth between the ages of 15–24 years across 23 states and 3 union territories were analyzed for their mental health status. Depression, anxiety, and stress (DAS) levels of the Indian youth were measured using DAS scale 21
