Strengthening systems, sustainably

Inform your discussions and decisions this week.?Building resilience amid climate change is not just about survival—it is about seeking to empower communities and businesses to thrive in a changing world.

The resilience of global food systems is critical. While enough food is produced to feed Earth’s 8 billion people about 2,200 calories per day per person, more than 800 million people still go hungry, and 3.1 billion cannot afford a healthy diet. In addition, nearly a third of all food is lost or wasted. In developing countries, most of this food loss happens on farms owing to a lack of storage and processing facilities. As climate change puts pressure on the global food system, better infrastructure will be essential.

Economist Impact’s Feeding the Future programme, which is supported by Lineage, explores how high-quality infrastructure—from food storage and transport systems to temperature-controlled supply chains—generates positive economic, social and environmental outcomes. Through a detailed examination of four essential pathways, our report explores the potential effects of high-quality food system infrastructure on people in hard-to-reach areas.

Also in this issue, find out why health systems need to strengthen in response to climate change, explore strategies for increasing water resilience in the EU and learn what citizens think about climate resilience in their city. You can also assess the factors that contribute to healthy ageing in Singapore, from personal attributes to the built environment.
