Kharif sowing up 14%, paddy area rises 19%
Thanks to the monsoon rains in the ‘active’ phase in the last fortnight, sowing of kharif crops has picked up pace. At 37.87 million hectare (MH) or 35% of the normal sown area, the combined sown area of key crops – paddy, pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane and cotton – was up 14% on year on Monday, according to data released by the agriculture ministry.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a petition seeking to lower the cut-off for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE), stressing the need to maintain high standards in the legal profession. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who led the bench, remarked that reducing the cut-off scores would negatively impact the quality of lawyers. Currently, the passing marks are set at 45% for general category candidates and 40% for SC/ST candidates.
Markets see some consolidation as countdown to Budget begins; Nifty closes over 24,400, Sensex at 80,350
Indian equity indices closed on a record-high note on Tuesday. Nifty 50 rose 123 points to hit a fresh record high of 24,443.60 and later settled 112.65 points or 0.46% higher, than its previous close, at 24,433.20. Similarly, the BSE Sensex touched its new all-time high of 80,397.17. It closed 391 points or 0.49% higher, than the previous close, at 80,351.64. Maruti Suzuki, M&M, ITC, Divi’s Laboratories, and Titan Company were the significant gainers in the Nifty 50 on Tuesday.
