Storytelling for today's climate.

关于我们

Good Energy is a nonprofit story consultancy for the age of climate change. We aim to make it as easy as possible to portray the climate crisis on-screen in entertaining and artful ways, in any storyline, across every genre. Launched in 2019, Good Energy’s team of experts and screenwriters provide the entertainment industry with tools and support to depict the climate crisis in scripted television and film, so that the stories we love reflect the world we live in now. By bridging the gap between climate experts, people on the frontlines of the climate crisis, screenwriters, and industry leaders, including through our foundational online resource, “Good Energy: A Playbook for Screenwriting in the Age of Climate Change,” we inspire stories that help us face the climate crisis with creativity and courage. Funders & Partners: Bloomberg Philanthropies, The Walton Family Foundation, Sierra Club, CAA Foundation, The Center for Cultural Power, IllumiNative, Hip Hop Caucus, The Solutions Project, Exposure Labs, Rare, NRDC's Rewrite the Future, & the Writers' Guild of America - East, & more. Led by an expert climate storyteller: For over 15 years, climate activist & communications strategist Anna Jane Joyner has harnessed the power of storytelling to persuade new audiences to care about climate change. Her efforts have been featured in Years of Living Dangerously, an Emmy-award-winning Showtime series, and in Rolling Stone, Grist, Glamour, MTV, The Associated Press, The New York Times, and more.

Wish you could ALL be here to witness the creativity and commitment of everyone at the Hollywood Climate Summit yesterday. So I'll share a few (of the SO MANY) remarks that stuck with me... Oh, and also a drag queen show with Pattie Gonia and geeking out with Bill Nye (who, together with LeVar Burton's Reading Rainbow, was the ONLY show my oldest daughter was allowed to watch... back when I still aspired to be an overachieving mom!) . (Baratunde, may I share your AMAZING dance at the end with Pattie Gonia?? Without your permission, I'll share the photo of me with Bill Nye instead..) What we ALL hold in common. "What extra-motivates me is the discovery of unexpected connections.... We did a segment on Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay. It's a very, very conservative community, by some measures among the 'Trumpiest' by voting records... and that island is disappearing because of rising seas, because we kind of broke the planet... Now, the mayor took me to a graveyard that was basically submerged and told me the story of having to exhume his own ancestors... and he cried with this sense of loss." Baratunde Thurston Flipping the script on who holds power now. "Immigrants by nature are green because we are poor." (Among SO MANY other thoughts, esp on how much better it gets when you're "old" and have no more f*ucks to give) Gloria Calderón Kellett The RESPONSIBILITY of culture. "Airtime is a privilege." Jennifer Statsky on her show "Hacks" What she could do even better next. "What we need to do is put the shift in values on screen and make those values compelling... collective protagonists who want something more than just 'winning...'" And, inspired by adrienne maree brown's Pleasure Activism, "The restorative movement has to be sexy and pleasurable." Brit Marling, Murder at the End of the World on Hulu Representation matters. "Do not leave indigenous folks out of the conversation. We are here." Karissa Valencia from Netflix's Spirit Rangers (check out Episode 19 for intergenerational solutions!) "We need to LISTEN to kids." Carson Smith from Nickelodeon "Rare measured that one episode of Madame Secretary and found that viewers were 3X more likely to only vote for candidates that support climate action." Anna Jane Joyner The reality is we have the solutions and our collective role needs to be to make them inevitable by creating demand and will. "We grew up on a ranch and did not come up from any means, so we had to make things work and fix things ourselves. What's good for people to know is you don't HAVE to jump in and have the new EV....you don't HAVE to feel like it's gotta happen now. Because the good thing is, at least in the home space, it's inevitable. We are electrifying homes." Jonathan Scott of Two Brother's Property Management and Rewiring America Too many people to name and recognize and have to run to today's sessions... more soon! Thanks Ali Weinstein, Allison Begalman and Heather Fipps for making this all possible.

Love this new The Hollywood Reporter story on the Climate Reality Check! "Which Blockbuster Movies Pass the Climate Test? Using recent results from a climate-change version of the Bechdel test, THR surveyed 20 top Hollywood hits to see how many of them addressed the climate crisis. Earlier this year, nonprofit story consultancy Good Energy teamed up with Colby College’s Buck Lab for Climate and?Environment (and Matthew Schneider-Mayerson!)?to release a tool to measure the representation of climate change onscreen, dubbed the Climate Reality Check. It was inspired by the popular Bechdel-Wallace test, which measures the representation of women in TV and film, and applied to 2024’s crop of?Oscar nominees?to mark its launch. THR?wanted to measure the test against?box office?success. We narrowed the time span down to 2018 to 2022, and from the report’s list of 250 films, found the top 20 box office earners in that five-year window. Of those 20 films, four passed both elements of the test —?Aquaman,?Jurassic World Dominion,?Venom?and?Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw?— while? The Batman?passed only one element of the test. The study also found that of the 250 films, 220 had theatrical releases, and films that included climate change (part one of the test) earned, on average, 8 percent more at the box office than those that did not. Additionally, films that included at least one character who is aware of climate change (passing part two of the test) performed 10 percent better at the box office than those that did not." Read the whole story here: https://lnkd.in/eja6ZZ7E And check out the Climate Reality Check and full study here: https://lnkd.in/eJfMjrUS Shout out to Bruno Olmedo Quiroga + Carmiel Banasky for leading on development of the Climate Reality Check for Good Energy !

As a little girl, I was captivated by Secretary?Hillary Clinton?during her time as First Lady. She was my first glimpse of a powerful woman in politics and instilled in me the belief that I, too, could ascend to roles of leadership. I moved from NYC to Alabama during her 2016 campaign, which I worked on, and quickly found myself on the fronlines of the climate crisis in a very red state. In the devastating aftermath of the election, I spiraled into a deep depression. It was one of the darkest chapters of my life, yet it was also during this time that the seeds of?Good Energy began to take root. In moments of struggle, I turn to stories for solace and courage (as humans have done for 30,000 years). Recognizing the absence of stories that reflected my own world and experiences sparked a resolve to inspire and support more climate stories on screen. Years later, I am overjoyed and immensely grateful that Secretary Clinton is championing the cause to inspire more engaging and impactful climate stories for children in television and film. This is not her first venture into Hollywood; over a decade ago, her Clinton Foundation initiative “Too Small to Fail” supported writers in integrating vital behaviors like singing and reading to children into shows from “Sesame Street” to “Orange is the New Black”—activities crucial for cognitive development. It was an honor to share a stage and conversation about my deepest passion at the?Environmental Media Association's Impact?Summit with Secretary Clinton and the amazing showrunner?Gloria Calderón Kellett, who has incorporated some of my favorite climate stories and references into her hilarious show, ‘One Day at a Time.’ Secretary Clinton was particularly amused to learn that the first show I worked on was ‘Madam Secretary’ (with my dear friend and Good Energy advisor?Alexander Maggio!) I am profoundly grateful for their leadership in championing climate storytelling. These efforts will undoubtedly inspire a wealth of new narratives in TV & film, making our world a safer and more compassionate place for future generations—and for us all. Huge thanks to Debbie Levin and the whole EMA team for hosting us, to Tamara Krinsky from moderating, Greg Propper at Propper Daley for organizing, Patti Miller for leading "Too Small to Fail," The Rockefeller Foundation for supporting this critical work, our agent + board member Melissa Sun at Rosenfield Media Group (RMG PR) for helping me prep, and Sammy Roth for the great story in the Los Angeles Times!
