As the pace of deployment of clean energy increases at an unprecedented rate every year, India is presented with the opportunity to produce for both domestic and international markets - placing clean energy manufacturing at a critical juncture. Strategic policy choices made now will determine whether Indian manufacturers of clean energy technologies emerge as world leaders or remain reliant on continuous government support in the short to medium term. India aims to install 500 GW of non-fossil based electricity generation capacity by 2030. And one of the key elements to decarbonisation is to ramp up our clean energy manufacturing.?
But do we have the potential? Launched at #REINEVEST2024, our first-of-its-kind study, ‘Strengthening India's Clean Energy Supply Chains: Building Manufacturing Competitiveness in a Globally Fragmented Market’, examines some opportunities and challenges on the road ahead.
The opportunities we have:
??Our solar and wind manufacturing base is gradually expanding.?
?? India is a net exporter of wind generators.?
??India could become a reliable supplier of clean energy technology products and components.?
The challenges we face:
??India remains a large net importer of solar modules and lithium-ion batteries, with the People’s Republic of China having an 80% share in battery imports in 2023.
??Critical minerals resources, processing know-how, and production equipment remain concentrated globally.
What specific segments/components of the clean energy supply chain must India focus on?
Manufacturing of junction boxes, anodes, aluminium foil, silver paste, wind turbine gearboxes and hub castings are a few #CleanEnergy relevant product families that India already has a comparative advantage in.
But to open up huge export opportunities for India, we don’t just need to build manufacturing capacity - we need to build competitiveness and drive structural transformation in the industry.?
Our analysis lists the clean energy relevant product families that India can prioritise for this. ??
Recommendations: Future-ready clean energy policy framework for India
The chart below summarises our key recommendations to strengthen India’s clean energy manufacturing sector:?
