In a pivotal visit to Morocco, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin underscored the robust collaboration between France and Moroccan intelligence services in the fight against terrorism, particularly with the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Morocco on the horizon.
Amid his visit, Minister Darmanin lauded the anti-terrorist cooperation with Morocco, emphasizing its critical role in enhancing security, especially in light of significant international events like the Paris Olympics. "Without the Moroccan intelligence services, France would face greater terrorist threats, and we deeply appreciate their invaluable support, especially as we prepare for the Olympics," stated Minister Darmanin following his meeting with Moroccan counterpart Abdelouafi Laftit.
Furthermore, Minister Darmanin highlighted the reciprocal support between Paris and Rabat during "major sporting events, including the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer and the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in 2025." Emphasizing the importance of intelligence sharing, Minister Darmanin reiterated France's vigilance regarding threats entering the Sahelo-Saharan region, amidst heightened tensions between France and Sahel countries.
Fostering a Renewed Franco-Moroccan Relationship

Minister Darmanin's visit occurs amidst a thaw in relations between the two countries following a period of unprecedented strain. He becomes the third French minister to visit the kingdom in as many months, following Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné in mid-February and Minister of External Trade Franck Riester in early April. Additionally, French Agriculture Minister Marc Fesneau is currently on a visit to Morocco until April 23, with Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire expected to follow suit later in the week.
The objective of these visits is to catalyze "a profound renewal and modernization of the Franco-Moroccan relationship," as indicated by Minister Darmanin, who is scheduled to hold discussions with Minister of Islamic Affairs Ahmed Taoufiq during his visit. Tensions between the longstanding allies arose in 2021 due to France's imposition of visa restrictions, exacerbated by a January 2023 European Parliament resolution condemning the erosion of press freedom in Morocco.
By leveraging shared interests and historical ties, France and Morocco are poised to deepen their collaboration, not only in counter-terrorism efforts but also in broader diplomatic and economic endeavors. Through sustained dialogue and cooperation, both nations can navigate challenges and seize opportunities, setting a positive example for international partnerships in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape. ???????? #CounterTerrorism #FrancoMoroccanRelations #SecurityCooperation
