Strengthening families and supporting positive parenting

Strengthening families and supporting positive parenting

It’s important we support children at CUPS. But we also support the parents. It’s this two-generational approach to support child development and increase positive parenting skills that ultimately helps to build resiliency.?

With ongoing strategic planning work at CUPS, we are able to continue to reflect on and evaluate the different ways this support can be provided to families in our community. And so, while we are temporarily suspending Child Development Centre programming in its current model, our commitment to strengthen families and support positive parenting hasn’t changed. In fact, it’s even stronger.?

Two-generational care is directly aligned with our integrated care model at CUPS. We are unwavering in our message that we cannot operate in silos. We need to support children and their parents. Just as we need to explore housing, mental health and physical health together — not as stand-alone supports.?

You may recall Cat’s story. Cat didn’t have the supports in place that she needed when she found out she was pregnant. She felt isolated and alone and needed help. Her connection to CUPS started with housing and then when her son was born, she was determined to break the cycle and give him a strong foundation for the future. She engaged in our Nurturing Parenting program and accessed other community events and support such as swimming lessons, passes to Heritage Park and more.?

Cat is one of many single parents we have supported in the last 30+ years who highlight the importance of two-generational, integrated care.?

The strategic review of the Child Development Centre doesn’t change that. We are working with families through the Family Development Centre on goal setting and opportunities for these units to survive and thrive. We are ensuring Kindergarten students are accessing the community support services available to ensure they are set up for success as they enter into public school programs. And we remain a resource and support system focused on ensuring these families aren’t feeling alone, but know they have a team of CUPSians ready and willing to help them break cycles and build resilience for the future…for themselves and their children.?

Agreed! Mental health is never a stand-alone issue. My team and I have been working hard to collaborate with other companies for this exact reason - to help bridge the gap between different supports for teens.

I love what you’re doing in this area. It’s so true that we must strengthen parents along with the kids. When parents are equipped and doing well, kids can too. Bravo Carlene ????????
