Strengthening Community Resilience: Folket Consultancy’s Disaster Management Workshop with Monaro Family Support Service (MFSS)

Recently, Monaro Family Support Service (MFSS) engaged Folket Consultancy to help improve disaster preparedness, response, and recovery in the Snowy-Monaro region of New South Wales, Australia.

Folket Consultancy was asked to help design and develop a workshop for local community services and organisations that would help:

1. Develop a unified message on the community sector’s role in supporting their communities before, during and after a disaster.
2. Coordinate community involvement in emergency management.
3. Enhance engagement with emergency services partners.

Led by Folket Consultant, Danielle O’Hara, we designed and delivered a comprehensive workshop featuring four interactive sessions:

• Response: Scenarios to highlight the important role of the community sector during a disaster.
• Recovery: Strategies for post-disaster recovery and long-term resilience.
• Preparedness and Planning: Proactive approaches to disaster readiness.
• Wrap-Up: Reflections and commitments to ongoing community resilience.

The workshop saw participation from 37 stakeholders, including local and state government representatives. Key outcomes included the development of a unified message, a community sector involvement plan, and identification of collaborative projects with emergency services partners and across the social services organisations.
