The Strength of Facial Recognition
With Facial Recognition hitting an estimated market worth of $9.78bn by 2023, there are definitely strengths in the technology for the purpose of identification and verification. In this article, I like to share on 2 key strengths of Facial Recognition which enables them to be used in various applications.
Availability of Face Image
In today's context, where can you possibly find out how a person looks like?
If you are reading this article in LinkedIn, it's likely that you have a digital footprint and you might have some other social & professional media accounts which posted some of your images. You could be appearing in some events and your image(s) is being taken by the event organiser and someone who knows you can identify you and your image become available.
Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Newspaper, Passport, Identity Card, etc. These are some of the places that I am using to search on how a person looks like. Especially if this is my first time meeting that person. By just putting the person's name on Google and it will return to me all the possible result based on the criteria(s) that I set. I have just googled myself and saw that this is the top result, which is rather interesting.

When is the last time you google yourself?
Above are some of the possible cases where different parties (good & bad) can get hold of someone's image and using it to conduct facial recognition search. Such wide availability is also one of the reasons why our Photo Identifications as always being used to prove our identity. However, does this always do the job and if it is really easy to tell if the image on the identification is exactly the same person standing in front?
This is part of the reason why facial recognition platform is used to complement human and mitigating error rate in recognising faces.
Standoff Biometric
Standoff System is those that do not need to get close to do what they are supposed to do. This also means that such a platform can be located from a distance or even covertly without people knowing of its existence. Depending on which side of the fence one sits on, it poses both opportunities and challenges.
Embedded and Unregulated: The Dark Side of AI and Facial Recognition
Without consideration of other external factors, face image can be taken from afar without the knowledge of the individual to perform Facial Recognition. As opposed to the other types of biometrics such as fingerprint and iris, it does not need interaction from the individual to perform its function. This is the perfect mode to filter wanted people out without having undue disruption to the general public.
The ability to perform standoff biometric also means that it can have the element of surprise to catch people off guard. This increases the chance of rendering other forms of evasive techniques ineffective to prevent an individual's identity from being identified.
Conclusion
Other factors such as advancement in the performance of facial recognition and ability to use a wide range of non-proprietary sensors (video cameras) accelerate the adoption rate in both commercial and homeland security applications.

However, it is important to note that there are other factors at play that could reduce the effectiveness of these strengths. While some might still be in the infancy stage, it is important to be aware and take those into consideration when implementing such a solution.
