Vets4Pets Ipswich reached out to us seeking help for emergency surgery for stray cat whom we believed was involved in a car traffic accident.
They were concerned as they faced having to decide upon amputation as they did not have the available funds to secure surgical care for him and in this instance we decided to work with them and offer our services free of charge
·??????We were immediately able to schedule surgery to repair the complicated fracture ‘Ernie’ (named by Vets 4 Pets) suffered.
·??????Ernie spent one night with us before being discharged back into the care of the team at Vets 4 Pets Ipswich.
·??????We are delighted to report he is making good progress and the team continue to search for his owner so that they can be reunited.
·??????Each of our teams worked quickly and with care to ensure that Ernie received the treatment he needed at no charge.
Lead Surgeon, Shane Morrison reflected on the case:

“A local first opinion practice admitted a stray cat without a traceable owner. The cat had been involved in an RTA and had sustained a severely distally comminuted fracture of the left tibia. The fracture passed to within a few mm of the lateral malleolus. The first opinion practice contacted us to see whether we would repair the fracture free of charge before moving on to a re-homing cattery. We agreed and repaired the fracture with orthogonal plates; a VO 14-hole 2.0mm locking hybrid plate on the medial aspect of the tibia and an N2 2.4mm locking plate on the cranial aspect of the radius. This combination allowed for six screws to be placed in the distal fragment.“
Vets4Pets Ipswich provided regular updates for their followers who were invested in the wellbeing of little Ernie. ??
“Our little stray who we have named 'Ernie' is safe, well fed and comfortable with pain relief.
While we cannot provide specific details, the microchip details were not up to date so we are still searching for his owner.
In the meantime we have looked into various options and have found a very lovely orthopaedic vet that will be assisting us in his care. He will then be rehomed with the Suffolk RSPCA branch.”
