Strategy v Implementation

There are lots of great transformation strategy documents gathering figurative dust in inboxes and Sharepoint folders. Many of them have come from big consultancies and cost a lot of money.
But then they’re not implemented. It’s too hard. It will cost too much. There are other things to be done first.
Or, sometimes worse, they’re implemented badly.
We need a great strategy, carefully researched and thought through.
But that’s of limited value if it isn’t implemented well.
That means taking the time for proper stakeholder engagement, including all affected. Communicating properly, tailoring the comms to the audience; the C-Suite might want a Powerpoint but the users want a Q & A session. Effective training. Ongoing support in BAU.
Above all, users need to understand what, why, when, what are the benefits and what will I need to do differently?
It’s astonishing how often these things aren’t done well. Org redesign and new tech gets imposed, and everyone has to just get on with it.
Then people wonder why the benefits predicted in the business case aren’t fully realised.

5 个月Absolutely agree, Paul. It’s astonishing how many well-crafted strategies end up gathering dust. The real challenge is implementation—engaging stakeholders, tailoring communication, and providing ongoing support. Without these elements, even the best strategies fall short. People need to understand the what, why, and how to make change stick. Successful transformation is all about execution.

5 个月A strategy that’s too hard or too costly, to use your examples Paul… simply isn’t a strategy. It’s just some musings / a paper. Clearly its not thought through. IMHO No-one should create a strategy they can’t do. Equally imho no-one should use a external consultancy to create their strategy. Whilst consultants are good at many things, creating a strategy isn’t ever one. Facilitating one, yes. A strategy has to be owned, internally.
