Strategy to scaleup India as a global AI Hub
This brief note is prompted by two items I came across today.
-??????? This wonderful article by Eugene Cheah https://substack.tech-talk-cto.com/p/what-does-it-mean-to-be-an-ai-hub related to a suggested roadmap to develop Singapore as an AI hub.
-??????? This article in Hindu Business Line related to deep tech startups in India shared by Shri DINESH KUMAR KAPILA https://www-thehindubusinessline-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/10-years-and-31000-startups-later-indian-startup-ecosystem-bets-on-deep-tech-gen-ai-for-next-phase-of-growth/article68457357.ece/amp/
The number of Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) recognized startups was 1,17,254 as on 31st December 2023. As per the BL article above, out of this the number of tech startups in 31,000. Of these as per YNOS Venture Engine the number of AI startups is 6,636. YNOS further reports that Rupees 95,857 crore was invested in AI startups of India. This amount is more than the health budget of our country for 2024. So we do have a strong AI startup ecosystem in India. However we need to explore additional opportunities.
-??????? AI education and research
-??????? AI outsourcing
-??????? AI Global Capability Centers (GCCs)
-??????? AI enterprise adoption
While we are doing well on outsourcing and GCCs I do feel we need more attention to education and research and enterprise adoption. All these areas are interconnected and need a tripartite collaboration between industry, academia and government. The Economic Survey for 23-24 points to the threat of AI to jobs. But any threat is also an opportunity and we must leverage our strengths to ensure that we take full advantage of this opportunity.

It is better to understand that human capital will be the key driver and not cement and steel assets. Decisions need to be taken in a few hours and data mining will only give direction and won't help in forecasting., all operations will see involvement of ai and decisions will emerge faster ,. Note writing , group discussions long meetings will not benefit decision making,. Lateral thinking and ai will be a formidable combination. Knowledge of the past will be available for all but forecasting the future will be the million dollar answer., administration will be fast and results both positive and negative will be seen as an outcome, Classroom training has already vanished and knowledge search engines will combine virtual situations and future projected Human brain activity may be reduced
