Strategy Is The Long Term Direction Of An Organization: Our NRL Bulldogs Case

If you are a student of strategic organizational management and love rugby league, watch this and listen deeply to Bulldog’s General Manager of Football, Phil Gould, narrate the strategy discourse of our team, the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs, as we reset, restore and reinvigorate our club to transform, sustain and grow into the foreseeable future.

The 'Three Horizons Of Strategy' Framework.

Learning to speak 'management speak' can be very well complemented with knowledge of how strategy is derived and how to read into strategy. There are four main ways to do strategy and are called strategy lenses: design, experience, ideas and discourse. In design lens, strategy is arrive at following a set of processes and procedures. In experience lens, strategy is reached by learning from past experience. Ideas lens is when strategy is derived by considering all suggestions from the cross section of the organisation. Strategy by discourse lens is through story telling. A lot of managers/leaders like to convey strategy through discourse.

The key to strategy by discourse is narrations but you have to go to that narrative with a framework. A framework is a physical diagram or a mental picture around which you will build your talk around.

The three levels of organisational thinking, time horizons and core skills apportionment.

Picture organisations being made up of three levels of thinking: strategic, tactical and operational. Strategic is long-term where future aspirations of the organizations are envisioned and policies are put in place. Tactical is medium-term where the policy intents of strategy are put into operational processes with their procedures by referencing some standards. Operational is short-term where the policy intents from strategic level are executed or operationalized following the specified processes and procedures developed at the tactical level.

In organizational management and for the organization to be effective, people must work at their right levels. The General Manager of Football for our Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs, Phil Gould, talks long-term about sustaining the current success, which is beyond expectations but delightfully and welcoming for us long-suffering Bulldogs fans. He is focusing on the AUD 50 million Belmore Sports Academy which will be equipped with the latest in what he envisioned should bring long-term sustainable success for our club. Can you pick what these are from his narratives?

Then Phil Gould explained the roles of the tactical team and what they do. Can you identify them and what those tactical roles are?

Finally there is the visible ‘10% of the iceberg’ that everyone see, that is, the players executing the defensive and offensive structures and leveraging what is already inherent in them that the organization culture and coaching unleashes.

Dear Gilbert, Your article helps me understand the four main ways do strategy. This fills some of the gap in my understanding of strategy; 1. The main idea behind the concept of a strategic lens is that it?provides different visions on issues related to strategy and the possibility of obtaining a more complete picture from multiple perspectives, and these different ideas can lead to thinking of different options or solutions to strategic problems. 2. Discourse strategies refer to?strategies employed during their conversation as an attempt to understand each other in that particular context of the conversation?(Gumperz, 1982). To understand each other's utterances, there should be a well-arranged structure made by the speakers. 3. In Idea Strategy - three simple strategy are, identify the problem/challenging behavior, Educate yourself and adaptation 4. Experience strategy - create meaningful experiences for customers using the resources that are available to innovate, grow, and increase the value of the experiences for customers and the company Thank you once again Gilbert
