360 Discussion Series Wrap-Up: Modern Learners – Navigating Multiple Personas and Commitments

This month, we concluded the third season of our 360 Discussion Series, Modern Learners: Navigating Multiple Personas and Commitments. Through four virtual discussions, we explored the factors shaping the postsecondary experiences of modern learners and the challenges impacting their pursuit and completion of credentials. Thank you to all our expert panelists and for making this season a success—be on the lookout for Season 4 in Spring 2025.

Unmet Financial Need and Student Success

College affordability remains a widespread concern, fueling perceptions that a postsecondary education may not hold the value it once did. As states work toward credential attainment goals, examining the costs tied to pursuing a credential and the impact on retention is essential.

Student Basic Needs and Mental Health

Our 2023 Student Financial Wellness Survey findings show that 42 percent of students facing basic needs insecurities simultaneously experience major depressive disorder (compared to 20 percent of students without food- or housing-related challenges). The impact of basic needs and mental health on student success is significant.

Employment Opportunities While Enrolled

Balancing academics around a work schedule creates competing priorities, forcing modern learners to choose regularly between needs and goals. Promoting pathways to earn a credential while working is vital for meeting workforce needs.

Time Poverty and Impact on Student Experience

Modern learners often prioritize personal commitments over credential pursuits, while working toward increased economic mobility. The impact of time scarcity on their credential attainment is undeniable.
