Strategies: 3 pillars of expert communication

Strategies: 3 pillars of expert communication

In every industry, expert communication and positive relationships are driving forces of success. Behind every sale, deal, or collaboration are weeks, months, and even years, of fostering strong, trustworthy relationships through nuanced communication whether it’s in person, over the phone, through email, or a combination of all three.

Best case scenario? In bolstering a successful career, we also create long-lasting relationships that are maintained beyond that final signature or sale. Behind the business acumen, we’re all human and humans thrive on connection and appreciation.

In forging memorable relationships, I urge other leaders to consider a three-pronged approach that has expanded my close network of colleagues and clients, many of which have also become close friends:

  1. Be an active listener: People don’t just want to be heard, they want to be understood. In every conversation, it’s important to not just listen to what people are saying but to also pay close attention to their non-verbal cues. By making note of expressions, tone, and body language, we can gain a deeper understanding of the other person’s perspectives, motivations, and aspirations. Being an active listener enables us to engage in more meaningful conversations that simultaneously foster trust and mutual respect.
  2. Make thoughtful introductions: Whether at industry events, business meetings, or informal gatherings, I make a concerted effort to remember details about individuals - their interests, professional journeys, or personal anecdotes. When I introduce them to others, I highlight their unique strengths and qualities, immediately shaping a supportive, uplifting environment. We make so many connections throughout our lives and by recalling personal narratives, you can take any conversation from mundane and routine to memorable and gratifying.
  3. Be authentic: Authenticity is fundamental to me. I believe in being genuine and transparent in all interactions. This approach not only builds honest connections but also cultivates an environment where others feel comfortable being themselves. By staying true to who I am, I establish a foundation of trust that is essential for fostering long-lasting relationships.

Bonus points if you take your relationships outside of the office In addition to my three guiding principles, I've found that shared experiences outside of work-related rapport can unexpectedly strengthen bonds and create lasting memories. I happen to love a spur-of-the-moment karaoke night. These moments of fun and relaxation outside of formal settings often lead to deeper connections and a sense of community. My goal in connecting with others extends beyond professional gain - it’s about nurturing a network of like-minded individuals who genuinely support each other’s success and well-being.
