Case Study

1.Project Background

As of the beginning of 2024, Changan Automobile, with an annual sales volume of over 2.55 million vehicles, ranks second among state-owned carmakers. In this context, how to maintain high output while ensuring quality and efficiency has become a major challenge for this Chinese carmaker.

?Stamping is the first process in automobile manufacturing. According to statistics, more than 60% of the parts on each car are stamping parts. Therefore, it is crucial for improving the quality of the entire vehicle to optimize the structure of inspection tools and ensure the precision and consistency of stamping parts.

?2.Recommended Machine Model

After a long discussion, we learned just one machine is by no means sufficient to help the customer enhance the quality management capability. Therefore, we demonstrated the flexible and efficient portable CMM onsite. And on top of that, we provided a tailored measurement solution, benefiting economic development not only for the time being but also in the long run.

The machine we recommended to the customer is the PMT ALPHA M 2.5m, 7-axis portable measurement arm. This model can cover the quality inspection of almost all parts, ensuring that all the sizes, shapes, and tolerances meet design requirements. The 7-axis measuring arm can be equipped with a laser scanning head. It helps solve the bottlenecks that traditional contact probes face, such as being unable to precisely measure the dimensions of massive special-shaped workpieces, bringing an all-round measurement experience.

3.Measurement Highlights

In practical application, the PMT portable CMM can be installed on the platform Base board for measurement, which saves time while changing the position of the workpiece and improves inspection efficiency.

Unlike the common cases before, PMT customized a measurement solution for Changan Automobile based on their specific needs, while achieving accurate measurements of quality control inspection tools and parts in the meantime.

?4.Measurement Process

We replaced part of the digital model with similar images due to confidentiality reasons.

  • Importing CAD Model

According to the design requirements, we imported the 3D model of the sheet metal parts and inspection tools to exclude design issues.

Considering the complexity of the data, the PMT engineer broke the data into small and manageable features, conducted surface reversal to avoid missing and wrong selections, and evaluated that all feature states are normal through normal color analysis, then start to measure.

  • Establishing Coordinate Systems

Collect data points to obtain the results of the flatness of the inspection tool platform using the PMT portable measurement arm. The PMT measuring arm helps avoid deformation of the inspection tool caused by transportation, ensuring accuracy of the subsequent measurements.

Next, according to the specific requirements of the reference holes, we selected the datum reference to create the coordinate system.

  • Data Adjustment

According to the technical agreement, we used the PMT portable CMM to inspec

t the features of the parts including the simulated block, positioning pin holes, gap surface difference, and zero contact surface, and adjusted the deviations so as to achieve accurate results.

  • Report Output

The customers can select the features as they want, and customize and output various formatted reports. The archived measurements allow data results to be easily traced for further analysis, improving the efficiency of product quality management.
