Strategic robotization: bespoke robot cell for VDL VDS
Manders Automation was recently asked to develop a unique assembly cell for VDL VDS. The result: a solution especially for mounting front parts of step grilles.
There are often no standard machines on the market that do exactly what the production process requires. That was also the case for VDL VDS.?
Our solution? Strategic robotization.?
The project: an assembly cell with two robots
Our Sales Engineer Rob Haerkens was closely involved in the development of the assembly cell. He explains: "In this cell, the metal part and the plastic part of the grille are connected to each other. Two robots and an operator take care of the supply of the parts, the assembly and the output".
Why did VDL VDS choose us
Rob: At Manders Automation, we're specialised in various assembly and joining techniques. Besides knowdlege about automation, you also need the proper process knowledge to succeed in the field in which we operate.?
As the last cell we've created for VDL VDS has been working properly for quite some time to everyone's full satisfaction now, we were also granted this next project. We know both ABB and VDL VDS well and the lines of communication are short. This makes it easy to align our expertises.
What were the biggest challenges?
In this project, the challenge was mainly in dealing with the dimensional stability of the plastic and in realizing the desired cycle times. This means: optimizing robot paths and processes by, for example, doing things in parallel or in a different order.
Optimal control
The assembly cell is managed by a central PLC which also directs the robot controllers and provides an OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) system with data. This system is linked to an ERP system developed by VDL. From this total system, insight is provided into the OOE of the cell, which continues to improve.
Do you also have a project where the standard solutions are not sufficient? Please send us a quick message via [email protected]. We’ll gladly contact you to discuss how we can help you.
PS: The full article we've created in collaboration with VDL VDS Technische Industrie and ABB Robotics about this project was previously published in Robot Magazine. You can read it?here.?
