Strategic Planning- Mapping the Future
A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to work with my City Council on their first Strategic Planning session. We started by looking back at some of our major accomplishments over the past few years. We talked about the construction of a new waste water treatment plant; construction of a new electrical substation; the new library, new housing developments, new swimming pool, pickleball courts and even a new police station that just had an open house event.
We talked about new businesses that have come to our community; manufacturers that have added onto their facilities and new retail businesses downtown.
We took a few moments to soak up the feelings for what has been accomplished. Then I asked them to create a vision in their mind of how they would like our community to look in 10 years. Each member of the council took their turn discussing what they would like to see. What I found to be interesting is their vision for the future wasn't based on "new" this or new that. It was anchored in the basics.
There was a clear focus on making improvements to our infrastructure. Improving our gas, water, waste water and electrical distribution systems. Addressing older housing stock in the central core of our community. To do more to take care of what we already have in our community.
They also expressed interest in doing more to support our essential services for Police, EMS and Fire services. To provide a safe and healthy environment for our residents.
During the retreat, each City Department Head was given time with the council to discuss their needs in terms of equipment, personnel and funds to provide services to our community.

I encouraged the council and staff to look forward and determine how much money it will take each year for the next ten years to improve and maintain our streets, utilities and services. Together we developed a long range budget plan so we can save and spend funds more wisely and achieve what we need to sustain and improve our community for many years to come.
The Council said they were pleased with their first Strategic Planning process. They appreciated the deeper look at what our staff need to accomplish their goals. The staff were pleased to have the opportunity to engage with the Council and get feedback on what they are doing now and where we are going in the future.
While I haven't finished writing the summary of the Strategic Planning session and we haven't finished plugging in all the numbers in the long range budget plan. I still feel good knowing, we are building a better vision for the future of our community.
