Strategic Leadership Principles

Strategic Leadership Principles

The late General Robert "Bob" Cone taught me about Strategic Leadership - he was one of America's best at it.

Twelve Strategic Leadership Principles to Make Leaders Successful.

All Army leaders must succeed at two practical tasks.

First is to make explicit that which is implicit. This means they must understand vision or intent and put it into definable, measurable, positive action.

Second is to do what the boss needs them to do, whatever that is and whether or not they understand or agree with it.

Both tasks address how we support our civil and military leaders, equip them to make the right decisions, and assist them with their strategic responsibilities.

We offer these 12 principles to help Army leaders understand the strategic perspective and enhance their leadership competency.

  • Vision—take the time to get it right.
  • Make mission command reality.
  • See yourself accurately.
  • We are all on the same side.
  • Decision points ahead of policy.
  • Use all the tools available.
  • Take care of people.
  • Never put leaders in a bad situation.
  • Think completely outside your lane.
  • Challenge convention.
  • Tell your boss when he is wrong.
  • Build personal relationships.

Thanks, BR Bogie! I would add one item I recall from our mil sci classes: Justice. A leader must be just and perceived so by his command. I recall various complaints about leaders by good men, and the most prevalent and emotionally expressed was whenever they perceived their leader as unjust. Some of my fiction incorporates leaders finding their courage and proving loyalty & justice toward those in their charge. Harrigan in Ancient of Genes and the spinoff short atories seems to have pleased many readers, and he's that kind of leader: StoriesAmazing.com . Thanks again Bogie; you've been a Harrigan kinda leader since VMI. Hope you recieved and liked SSFP that I sent you when you served in Afghanistan.
