Strategic Leadership for 2024 and Beyond: Driving Growth and Value Creation

Strategic Leadership for 2024 and Beyond: Driving Growth and Value Creation

It was not too long ago, as I sat with my senior leadership team, having just wrapped-up a very intensive multi-day SWOT analysis (and likely the first-ever in the history of our company as we were all new), where our focus quickly shifted to our vision creation -- where we thought we could be in the next 10-15 years and what it would take to get there.

Our SWOT analysis gave us some very compelling, meaningful and insightful information to work with, and it did not take us too long to agree on our new vision BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal). From this point forward we set out to identify a number of quick hit action items and then laid out our plan of attack for the coming year with a priority list of the must accomplish/master strategic initiatives. We knew we could not boil the ocean and with limited resources and a pressing clock we established a clear direction, and agreed on assignments with process owners. Our immediate next steps were to then create our FAST (frequent, ambitious, specific, and transparent) goals for the upcoming quarter. We were fully aligned, directionally correct, and we marched double-time with a keen focus on trajectory and velocity.

We all realized the significance of maintaining a balanced focus on both today and tomorrow -- addressing our current state and preparing for where we knew we could and needed to be by the next quarter, the end of the year and then realigning and adjusting as needed to re-launch and slingshot ourselves into the next business year.

My next phase of work was to then assess the key leadership traits and skills that I would need to re-tool and or add to best support my team and the company, and to identify where I could best work to serve each team member. This exercise resulted in a professional development plan for each team member -- identifying my commitments to their growth, and tailored action items which each team member agreed to address. We fully recognized that the achievement of business growth and our vision was also linked and dependent on our respective professional growth and development.
