Strategic Leaders Have a Personal Growth Plan

Personal growth is essential to a successful career due to the profound impact it has on an individual's skills, mindset, and overall effectiveness with your teams in the workplace. As I wrote in my book, The Identity Effect, anytime you want to care for something you must understand it. If a car is tuned, fueled, oiled, and aligned it is capable of amazing things. You need to understand the car and how all the parts work together to truly understand its capabilities.

It is important to understand where you need to grow before you should be growing your leaders. Only then can you have an effective, well-oiled team.

Here's a summary of why personal growth is crucial for a thriving career:

1.???? Skill Enhancement: Personal growth involves acquiring new skills and improving existing ones. As industries evolve, so do the demands for specific competencies. Continuously developing your skill set ensures you remain relevant and adaptable in a rapidly changing job market.

2.???? Increased Productivity: Personal growth often leads to increased productivity. When you strive for self-improvement, you become more efficient at managing tasks, time, and resources. Improved productivity makes you an asset to employers, enhancing your career prospects.

3.???? Adaptability to Change: Embracing personal growth fosters a mindset of adaptability. Change is a constant in most industries, and individuals who are open to learning and evolving are better equipped to navigate transitions and capitalize on new opportunities.

4.???? Enhanced Problem-Solving: Personal growth encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Engaging in activities that challenge your intellect and decision-making abilities translates to better problem-solving capacities in professional settings.

5.???? Confidence Boost: As you grow personally, your confidence naturally increases. This newfound self-assurance is reflected in your work and interactions with colleagues, clients, and superiors. Confidence can lead to more prominent roles, increased responsibilities, and greater recognition.

6.???? Effective Communication: Personal growth often involves developing better communication skills, including active listening, articulation, and empathy. Strong communication skills are invaluable for collaboration, negotiation, and leadership, all of which are essential in a career.

7.???? Leadership Development: Many personal growth activities foster leadership qualities. Whether you're leading a team or taking initiative within your role, cultivating leadership skills can open doors to promotions and positions of greater responsibility.

8.???? Networking Opportunities: Engaging in personal growth often means attending seminars, workshops, and events. These settings provide excellent networking opportunities, allowing you to connect with like-minded professionals, potential mentors, and future employers.

9.???? Continuous Learning: Personal growth involves a commitment to lifelong learning. In the dynamic world of work, those who continuously seek new knowledge and insights are better positioned to adapt to emerging trends and technologies.

10.? Career Satisfaction: Personal growth contributes to a sense of fulfillment in your career. When you actively pursue growth, you're more likely to find your work meaningful and satisfying, leading to increased motivation and dedication to your professional journey.

11.? Resilience and Stress Management: Personal growth equips you with the emotional intelligence and coping mechanisms necessary to manage stress and setbacks. Resilience in the face of challenges is a valuable trait that can help you persevere in your career.

Personal growth is a continuous journey that enriches your capabilities and enhances your overall career trajectory. However, to grow yourself you must know yourself, just like in the car example earlier.

Do you have a sense of direction for where you want to be or what part is out of alignment?

If you want to reach your full potential, you need to know where you are and where you want to be. Only then can you develop an intentional growth plan. A growth plan should fill in the gaps using:

  • what strengths you offer the world
  • an awareness of your weaknesses so you can bypass them (not fix them) and focus on your strengths
  • a knowledge of your interests or passions (what makes you excited!)
  • following the pathways for opportunities (I like to say follow the breadcrumbs on your path).

There are three kinds of people when it comes to finding direction and growing. Which one are you?

(1)?? The confused. These are people who don’t know what they would like to do.

(2)?? The frustrated.? These are people who know what they want but take no action to pursue. They are not intentional about their growth.

(3)?? The fulfilled. These are people who know what they want and intentionally pursue it.

Once you have your growth plan established and started, you can now help your emerging leaders with their plans.
