Straightening your self-talk: how's yours lately?

How's your self-talk lately?

Often, the voice inside our head is our own biggest critic. But it can also be our best friend, guiding us, and cheering us on. It's all about the language we choose. Here are some of my favourite phrases my clients say to themselves when they want to max their mojo:

  • I love feedback. It helps me see things from someone else’s point of view, even when I don’t agree.
  • There is always a way. If I keep working through it I will find the best route.
  • If it’s not working, I can change it.
  • I won’t be blinded by what I see in front of me right now. I know I can't see other opportunities because I'm not quite there yet.
  • I am making assumptions here- and they might be useful. They might also be unhelpful. I get to choose.
  • What evidence do I have about my thinking, and how else could I interpret what I'm experiencing?
  • I need to consider what's triggering my thoughts and why this is important to me right now.
  • How will I reflect on this, a month or a year from now?
  • My thoughts are not my instructions about how I behave (thanks to Cassandra Goodman for this gem).

For an in-depth read on this topic, I'd recommend "Chatter" by Dr. Ethan Kross. It’s a great resource to delve deeper into understanding and improving self-talk.

Your self-talk is not who you are. But, it does affect your life decisions. When we find ourselves using wistful language, it can lead to feeling passive and insignificant. In contrast, worthy language is proactive and helps us feel influential and valuable. It lets us take up space, stand tall, and reminds us of our worth. Make a contrast frame and create a simple table with two columns titled My Wistful Words and My Worthy Words. Fill them up with words or phrases you find yourself often using. Here's a little starter for you:

My Wistful Words

Nostalgic – thinking about how life was better when X

Desiring – I used to want X

Sad – I missed out on X

My Worthy Words

Deserving – I deserve to have X

Valuable – I am valuable because X (or I value X)

Model – when I do X, I'm modelling the person I want to be

Take a moment to reflect on these words. Which column do you find yourself leaning towards? And remember, every moment is a chance to pivot and choose worthy words. Let's continue to empower ourselves and others with our words.?You're worthy of straightening your self-talk.
