Straight Line Sales Psychology : Inner World "Beliefs"

The Beliefs we have about what we’re capable of define our actions more than anything else.

Your beliefs — and most importantly the beliefs you have about yourself – are the single greatest factor that can hold you back. Specifically, it’s the beliefs you have about whether or not you’re going to succeed that affect you the most. Even providing the best tools, resources, training and opportunity won’t help people take action if they don’t believe they are going to succeed.

Self-Belief

You may often avoid trying things that you believe you won’t be very good at.

This is because your brain starts to project what it thinks might happen before you take action – it's ‘future paces’ your actions and projects possible outcomes and then it decides whether or not there’s a likelihood of success.

If there’s not a likelihood of success, your brain says “don’t do it!” and you don’t have the motivation or confidence to take action. You brain tells you there is too much risk and it’s not worth the effort.

The flip side to this fear is developing your own personal belief about what you’re really capable of. For most of us we’re capable of much more than we ever really imagine.

Your Prospect’s Beliefs

Just as you have self-beliefs, your prospects also have their own set of beliefs – sometimes empowering and sometimes disempowering – that will affect whether they take action. If you know what beliefs are getting in their way, you can help them move past them thereby removing any impediments to investing in your product or service.

Empowering & Disempowering Beliefs

A belief is what you think and believe about the world. The more certain you about something, the stronger your belief is. And the harder you need to work to change it!

There are two types of beliefs: Limiting Beliefs and Empowering Beliefs.

Everyone has empowering and limiting beliefs. However at the end of the day, it’s our lowest limiting belief that holds us back. That’s what a limiting belief does in your life — it stops you from charging forward when you should and causes you to pull back when you shouldn’t. Instead, be aware of what these are so you can uproot the beliefs that disempower you and replace them with the empowering beliefs that will drive you forward.

The Power of Beliefs

The power of the belief is not in the idea you have—it comes from the references that support it. The more references we have and the more experiences we have in our past that made us feel a certain way, the more certain we are that the belief is actually true.

However, just because we believe something DOESN’T MEAN IT IS TRUE. They are just beliefs — beliefs that are disguising themselves as facts of life. You can’t break a limiting belief by wishing it away. The way you break a limiting belief is to go after the legs and knock them out!

By going back into the past, re-examining your experiences and applying new meanings, you can actually re-experience it and change the language. Remember, the language that you apply to anything that happens creates the meaning. One-by-one, as you go back to the root experiences of your limiting beliefs and give them new meanings, it’s like knocking out the legs.

Identifying Limiting Beliefs

The first step in changing those beliefs that hold you back are identifying them in the first place and understand the effect they are having on your life. In this video Jordan goes through the process of identifying limiting beliefs, understanding the consequences of these beliefs and creating doubt about the validity of these.

Associating Pain With Limiting Beliefs

To change your limiting beliefs, it is important to associate your beliefs on a deep emotional level and feel pain associated with a core belief.

Think of a particularly negative experience in your life that caused you some pain. Go back and really dig in – feel your pain for a second, and think about the belief you created as a result.

What has this belief cost you? How much has this hurt you? How much has it embarrassed you? Think about how awful it felt to not be able to do what you wanted to do. How much did it affect your life, or affect your family or your children? How many times did your limiting belief set a negative example for the people you love, and cause pain in yourself and other people?

Timeline Regression – Changing Limiting Beliefs

Now that you have identified your most powerful limiting belief and the pain you have experienced as a result, it’s time to create a belief timeline and uproot your limiting belief forever!

If your current beliefs have not served you in the past, are not serving you in the present, and certainly will not serve you in the future, why keep them? Redefine your limiting beliefs and see what you are capable of!

Remember, the beliefs we have about what we’re capable of, define our actions more than anything else. The things that you say out loud, the things that you feel in your heart, have massive impact on what you do or don’t do in your life.

They are based on your beliefs. Beliefs you may have created at some point in your life to try to protect yourself; beliefs you’re not even aware you have. But they are beliefs that are affecting you and they no longer serve you.

The Straight Line is the X-Factor that will elevate you to another level of sales success (along with a change in your limiting beliefs), you’re going to start noticing positive changes in how you approach your sales, business and life.

Well said, Theresa! I loved it when you said, "The things that you say out loud, the things that you feel in your heart, have massive impact on what you do or don’t do in your life." I was reminded of the saying that the greatest prophet of our lives are our own selves. It is a matter of gearing towards right mindset and perspective. Thank you for sharing your articles, it's brilliant!
