The Storyteller's Dilemma: To Influence or To Manipulate?
I stare at the guy across from me -- his torso leaned in, eyes lit up with a big eager smile. I'm about to start my session on storytelling and persuasion. If you're looking to harness the power of stories, keep reading.
"Storytelling is a tool of power. Like a sword, you can wield stories to influence or manipulate. Use it wisely -- with power comes responsibility."
"What's the difference?" One of the other participants asked. I'm in Vietnam.
I pause as I lean in and look around the room, "It boils down to intention. With influence, you intend to inspire, engage, and persuade. With manipulation, you intend to control and deceive."
Since starting What's Your Story Slam , I've coached over 500 people on storytelling. I've lost count of the number of workshops I've run on the subject.?

1 年So do you see the difference between 'influencing' and 'manipulation' as primarily being one of intent? Because the process and the outcome are the same, just the difference is the reason people are doing it?
