The Storyteller's Dilemma: To Influence or To Manipulate?

The Storyteller's Dilemma: To Influence or To Manipulate?

I stare at the guy across from me -- his torso leaned in, eyes lit up with a big eager smile. I'm about to start my session on storytelling and persuasion. If you're looking to harness the power of stories, keep reading.

"Storytelling is a tool of power. Like a sword, you can wield stories to influence or manipulate. Use it wisely -- with power comes responsibility."

"What's the difference?" One of the other participants asked. I'm in Vietnam.

I pause as I lean in and look around the room, "It boils down to intention. With influence, you intend to inspire, engage, and persuade. With manipulation, you intend to control and deceive."

Since starting What's Your Story Slam , I've coached over 500 people on storytelling. I've lost count of the number of workshops I've run on the subject.?

Lately, I've been getting more and more requests to run workshops on storytelling and influence - particularly for sales teams and the next generation of leaders.

Leadership and sales require more than strategic acumen, conversational and management skills; it often relies on the power of storytelling. Here's how we can harness storytelling, with its potential and pitfalls.

Influence: Persuade and Inspire

  • Persuade: We can use stories to present ideas, relating them to shared values or common goals. We can persuade others to align with a particular direction or decision by connecting emotionally.
  • Inspire: Storytelling can inspire teams by highlighting success stories, conveying the company's mission, or sharing a future vision. An inspiring narrative can foster a sense of purpose and motivate individuals to strive for excellence.

Manipulate: Mislead and Control

  • Mislead: Unfortunately, we can use storytelling unethically to mislead or conceal the truth. Whether through exaggeration, omission, or distortion of facts, misleading narratives can erode trust and damage relationships.
  • Control: Manipulative storytelling aims to control behaviour or perception through coercion or deception. While it may achieve short-term compliance, it's likely to create resentment and disengagement over time. It breaks trust.?

Navigating the Fine Line: Ethical Storytelling

  • Transparency and Integrity: As leaders, we must strive for honesty and authenticity in our narratives. This action builds credibility and fosters an environment of trust.
  • Responsibility and Accountability: Recognising the power of stories means using them responsibly. As leaders, we must be accountable for the narratives we create, ensuring they align with organisational values and ethical standards.

Conclusion

Storytelling is a powerful tool for everyone, but great responsibility comes with great power. Whether used to persuade, inspire, mislead, or control, we can't underestimate the impact of storytelling.

As leaders, we must be mindful of the stories we tell, constantly weighing the potential to influence positively against the temptation to manipulate.?

We can create a culture of trust, inspiration, and shared purpose by approaching storytelling with integrity, empathy and aligning it with our values.?

So do you see the difference between 'influencing' and 'manipulation' as primarily being one of intent? Because the process and the outcome are the same, just the difference is the reason people are doing it?
