Story of the Week: The Journey of Abdul Moeed Salam
Python is one of the most popular and versatile programming languages in the world. It is used for web development, data analysis, machine learning, automation, and more. Learning Python can open up many opportunities for students who are interested in technology and coding, such was the case of a student at UTech named Abdul Moeed Salam who is 13 years old.
Abdul Moeed’s journey with Python started at the beginning of 2023. After the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, he, like every other student or teenager at the time, was propelled into the ever-growing and fascinating world of technology. The dependence on technology to attend school gave him time and experience to explore different parts of the internet and build curiosity for how all of these systems work and operate. He acquired a lot of beneficial knowledge of technology and computers, as he dove deeper he discovered that every application, website, and program was developed through coding\programming (before the surge of AI) with computer languages. Researching about coding, the name of one particular programming language came up more than others: Python, thus, his fascination with the Python coding language started.
In early 2023 Abdul Moeed took a 1 hour free trial class with Codingal. In that class, he learned the basics of how if else conditions work. After this class, the teacher, a Codingal consultant & Abdul Moeed’s mother hopped on a Zoom call. The teacher described Abdul Moeed as a very quick learner who can easily connect the dots in his mind which helps him to better understand topics. The three discussed courses and how to proceed further, his mother told the Utech consultant that she would get back to her soon.
Around that time one of Moeed’s relatives, who is a professor at NED University that has taught Unais Ali the founder of Utech, during his university years, recommended that Moeed should join Utech’s program if he wants to pursue technology. He decided to give Utech a try too before choosing if he wants to continue with Codingal or Utech. In June of 2023, he enrolled in a Beginner Python Course offered by Utech at MAJU University. The course consisted of 8, 3-hour classes that covered the basics of Python syntax, data structures, functions, loops, conditionals, libraries, and more. After every class, there was homework that had to be completed before the next class. He was connected the entire time with junior instructors and his teachers if he needed any assistance.
The next month, in July 2023, he enrolled in another course related to AI and machine learning that was also based on Python. With the skills he acquired from these two courses, he made a few projects such as a calculator with GUI and many machine learning data models. The team at Utech liked this effort and so in one of his final machine learning classes, they recorded a short podcast about his journey and experience so far (linked below).
In October of 2023, Utech launched a junior ambassador program. A team of 30 of the best Utech students from the past 4 years that were going to represent Utech, participate in exhibitions, and most importantly give free workshops to students and forward them to full courses taught by the main teachers. So far in this ambassador program, Moeed has conducted 2 workshops, participated in one exhibition where he exhibited a few of his software projects and some of his paintings that he makes as a personal hobby, and he has also taught Python to Utech’s International students from Oman and Canada. He is currently in the process of launching 2 new free online workshops related to Python that will take place in a few weeks on 16th and 17th March 2024. With Utech he has acquired a certificate from the University of Michigan, and personally completed 2 other courses from Google Cloud on Generative AI and Coursera Project Network on web designing Utech themselves have given him many certificates as well. He has also gotten the opportunity to participate in an international competition by Eastern Michigan University called ‘Dare to Design’. Along with his team, they have created a platform called Scholar Boost for educational crowdfunding in Pakistan. This platform will be launched on the Play Store if their team passes the qualifying round at NED University soon. Abdul Moeed's journey with Utech only started 9 months ago, yet he has already accomplished ample milestones.?
Moeed says that one of the best decisions that he has made in his life was choosing Utech over Codingal. At Utech he has found like-minded people and bonded with them physically and not just from a screen. He states that he has found his community. Abdul Moeed is rapidly expanding his set of skills and knowledge base and hopes to be in other technological ventures with Utech.
