"Hey, how's it going?" one of the coworkers asked the other.
They were different from one another in almost every way. One was short, the other tall. One was Black, the other White.
Once was a woman, the other a man. One was gay and the other straight. One was Democrat and the other Republican.
While they seemed so different, they both enjoy a great cup of coffee. Because they shared this one simple enjoyment together they, found a way to connect. They were better at listening to one another in meetings and found respectful ways to share their differing opinions.
"It's going well, thanks for asking. How about you?" the other coworker replied.
"I'm doing good. I wanted to ask you about something," the first coworker said.
"Sure, what is it?"

"I was thinking about that project we are working on and wanted to know if I can run some more ideas by you?"
"Of course, I would love to hear them."
The first coworker then proceeded to share some of their ideas about the project. The other coworker listened attentively, asked clarifying questions, and offered their own insights. Together they were able to come up with a plan that they both felt good about.
Without that shared enjoyment of coffee, it's unlikely that these two coworkers would have developed the same level of trust and respect for one another. But because they did, they were able to work together more effectively and efficiently, benefiting both themselves and their company.
Shared interests and experiences are a powerful way to connect with others, even if it's something as simple as enjoying the same type of coffee. When we find ways to connect with others, we build relationships that can help us achieve our goals both professionally and personally.
So next time you're enjoying a cup of coffee, take a moment to think about how this simple pleasure has the power to connect us with others in such a meaningful way.
What are some of the ways that you have connected with others over coffee? I would love to hear your stories in the comments below.
